조선 학자들의 경전 독서 차례에 대한 인식 논리 -『격몽요결(擊蒙要訣)』과 『하학지남(下學指南)』의 사례를 중심으로- = A Theory of Perception on Sequence of Reading -Focusing on Cases of 『Gyeokmongyogyeol(擊蒙要訣)』 and 『Hahakjinam(下學指南)』-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 조선 학자들이 경전을 독서하는 차례에 대한 검토이다. 경전독서법을 가장 우선적이고 선명하게 제시한 율곡 이이의 『격몽요결』과 그를 충실하게 조술하며 확장한 순암 안정복의 『하학지남』, 그의 제자 하려 황덕길의 보완을 중심으로 경전 독서에 대한 인식 논리를 검토하였다.
율곡이 『격몽요결』에서 제시한 독서 차례는 송학의 성리학적 심성수양을 충실하게 구현하는 데 요긴한 방향으로 구축된 것이다. 가장 우선적으로 제시된 『소학』을 읽고 『대학』을 읽는 순서가 당대 가장 수준 높은 교육을 받았던 왕세자에게도 어려운 것이었지만 율곡이 제시한 ‘이상적’인 방법론은 실제 교육현장에서 그대로 적용되었을 뿐만 아니라 당색을 초월하여 널리 전파되었다. 순암 안정복과 그 제자 하려 황덕길의 독서차제도는 그러한 현상을 가장 단적으로 보여주는 정황이다.
그러함에도 불구하고 율곡이 게시한 독서 차제는 그 학술적 성과에 있어 명암이 없을 수 없다. 지나치게 경학을 우선시하여 기타 학문에 대한 관심을 줄인 것이나 섭렵을 금지하는 엄격한 단계론과 정독을 요구한 것은 풍부한 지식의 섭취를 저해하는 요인으로 작용할 수 있다. 심성수양 위주의 목표인식은 적극적인 사회적 실현에 대한 의지를 반드시 견인한다고 보기 어렵다. 벽이단의 시각은 가장 심각한 문제를 일으킬 수 있는데 그것은 학문의 다양성에 대한 강력한 장애요인으로, 심지어 문예에까지 영향을 미친 것은 적지않은 부작용이다. 기실 그러한 시각은 근대로 넘어오기까지 우리가 고전에서 활용할 수 있는 자산을 축소하는 결과를 초래했는데 이는 반성해야 할 대목이 아닐 수 없다.
결과적으로 독서 차제에 대한 율곡의 제시는 학문의 발전단계에 적지 않은 자양분을 제공함과 동시에 학문발전의 편중을 낳았다는 사실도 간과할 수 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 조선학계에서 큰 파급력을 가지고 수용되었는데 이유는 무엇이었을까? 이 점에 대해서는 후고에서 논의하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article is a review on the sequence of reading for scriptures by the Joseon scholars. The theory of perception on scriptures reading is reviewed around 『Gyeokmongyogyeol』 of Yulgok Yiyi that presented the method of scripture reading in the most preferential and clarified ways and 『Hahakjinam』 of Sunam An jeong-bok who implicated and expanded the thoughts with the supplement of his disciple, Haryeo Hwang Deok-gil.
The sequence of reading presented by Yulgok in 『Gyeokmongyogyeol』 was structured in the direction critical to substantively realize the nature meditation in Neo-Confucianism of Song Hak It was difficult even for the crown prince who had the highest level of education at the time with the sequence of reading 『Sohak』 that was presented with the most primary sequence, followed by reading 『Daehak』, but the ideal methodology presented by Yulgok was not only applied in the actual education field but also was broadly dispersed beyond the political sectors. The system for sequence of reading of Sunam An Jeong-bok and his disciple, Haryeo Hwang Deok-gil, demonstrated such phenomenon in the clearest aspect.
Notwithstanding of such fact, the system for sequence of reading presented by Yulgok should have certain light and shade with respect to the academic outcome. It would be feasible to consider that reducing the advancement and interest on other academic fields with the excessive preference on Chinese classics or demanding for stringent phraseology and well-reading that banned the thorough reading would be a factor to interfere with the enriched absorption of knowledge. The perception on nature meditation-oriented objectives is difficult to consider that it leads the willingness for enthusiastic social realization. The view of Byeokidan could provoke the most serious problem due to the fact that it was a powerful factor for interference with the diversity of academics with the significant side effect on influence to the literature and culture. In fact, such a view caused the result to curtail the assets that we could facilitate in the classics until it comes into the modern era and it is a category that needs to be carefully reflected.
As a consequence, the suggestion of Yulgok on the sequence of reading provided the significant nutrition to the advancement phase of academics as well as leaning toward academic development at the same time that cannot be neglected. Notwithstanding the fact, what is the reason for accommodating such fact with significant dispersion effect in the Joseon academic circle? This point will be addressed in the articles to be presented.
