    Poor oral hygiene has been linked to microbiome-related systemic infections such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and dementia, so maintaining good oral hygiene becomes an essential part of overall health. The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of OR containing 0.045% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) on oral-health related parameters through a 6-wk double-blinded and randomized clinical trial. At baseline, 80 subjects were assigned into 2 groups: Control (Con) group treated with oral rinse without active ingredient (n=40), and Experimental (Exp) group treated with oral rinse containing CPC (n=40), and received teeth scaling before clinical treatment. The subjects gargled using 20 mL of oral rinse for 30 s after brushing their teeth twice a day for 4 wk. The results demonstrated a substantial decrease in odor causing volatile sulfur compounds (hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan) in the Exp compared to Con. Furthermore, the Exp group dramatically reduced oral bacteria (p < 0.05), lessened tongue coating index (TCI) (p < 0.05), and improved periodontal and gingival health faster than Con group. Collectively, application of CPC-containing oral rinse showed positive effect for oral health condition by improving mouth odor, TCI and oral bacteria, and might be recommended as an adjunctive to the standard home care routine for people with gingivitis.
