The manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum), a bivalve mollusk belonging to the family Veneridae, is one of the most important aquaculture species in the tidal flats of the west coast of Korea. Over the past five years, manila clam’s aquaculture production has been primarily concentrated along the west coast of Korea, with Jeollabuk-do accounting for 74% of the total aquaculture production. Within Jeollabuk-do, Gochang-gun contributes over 90% of the production, while its yield of Gunsan city accounts for approximately 5%. In Gochang's manila clam aquaculture farms, due to the absence of naturally occurring seeds for manila clam cultivation, spats are purchased from external aquaculture regions and dispersed annually for cultivation. In contrast, Gunsan's aquaculture farms are cultivated using naturally occurring manila clam seeds. Therefore, although smaller in area and yield than Gochang’s farms, the economic efficiency of clam cultivation is exhibited in Gunsan’s farms more than Gochang’s farms.
This study was conducted to analyze the correlation between environmental factors and the population characteristics of Manila clams in Hajeon, Gochang-gun, and Munyodo, Gunsan City located in Jeollabuk-do from February 2023 to January 2024. The research aimed to establish environmental assessment criteria for shellfish aquaculture grounds, secure baseline data for the evaluation indices and grading systems, and propose efficient management strategies. Field investigations were conducted from February 2023 to January 2024 in the Hajeon manila clam farm of Gochang-gun and the Muyeo-do manila clam farm of Gunsan-si, located in Jeollabuk-do. Physicochemical characteristics of the sediment, the community structure of macrobenthic, and the population characteristics of manila clams were investigated to identify the key environmental variables influencing clam growth. The results estimated that the environmental factors of sediment and population characteristics of manila clams were influenced by differences in sediment particle size and harvesting methods in the two clam farms. Currently, the aquaculture environmental assessments primarily focus on the sediment properties of fish cage farms, but considering the distinct characteristics of clam farms with varying sediment compositions, it may be necessary to redefine the evaluation criteria and management strategies for clam farms assessing these environmental factors and macrobenthos communities.
