The purpose of this paper is not only to analyze the general attitudes of the graduate students of English education(teacher trainees) toward the education of punctuation marks but also to check their abilities in punctuation marks.
According to the results of the study, most of the teacher trainees surprisingly do not recognize the name and usages of such punctuation marks as semicolon, colon, dash, hyphen, apostroghe. We can find the causes of these results in the fact that they did not get enough education about punctuation marks either through their regular courses or even through the courses of the teacher trainee program.
The fact that teacher trainees do not have enough qualities to teach punctuation marks implies the possibility that they would not teach punctuation marks to students when they become teachers, which in turn leads to the absence of punctuation marks.
To improve the education of English punctuation, I suggest that the institutes which educate teacher trainees should organize courses that give them more chances to get knowledge of punctuation marks and that teacher trainees aslo should study more about punctuation marks.
