Fossil fuel-based energy resources such as oil, coal, and natural gas have been the driving force for global economic development. However, these fossil fuel-based energy production and consumption activities cause global warming problems by increasing global greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, due to the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, the Gyeongju earthquake in 2016, and severe fine dust, the public's negative perception of traditional fossil energy is increasing, and interest in new and renewable energy sources is increasing. In addition, public interest in power facilities that are increased or reduced according to the government's energy mix plan is growing. In this process, the importance of social acceptance is being emphasized in which energy source the people actually choose and accept. The reason is that the conversion process to renewable energy due to the decrease in the use of fossil fuels, a traditional energy source, may lead to unexpected increases in production costs or various negative results.
There are various sources of renewable energy around us, such as wind power, hydropower, solar power, biomass, geothermal power, and tidal power. However, in order to select such an energy source, various criteria must be considered. This study confirmed the priorities of renewable energy sources considered most suitable for Korea in consideration of technical, economic, social, political and environmental aspects for the expert group and the general public.
