채만식 풍자소설에 나타난 아이러니 번역양상

국문 초록 (Abstract)

소설에서 아이러니 개념은 아주 포괄적이어서 아이러니 유형에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 유형은 크게 언어적 아이러니(verbal irony)와 상황적 아이러니(situational irony)로 구분할 수 있다. 언어적 아이러니는 일반적으로 반어법이라는 수사적 표현으로, 말과 의미가 모순되는 경우 또는 말과 그 말에 담긴 의미가 반대되는 경우에 해당된다. 상황적 아이러니는 의도한 행동과 실제 결과가 다르게 나타나는 경우 또는 예상한 결과와는 반대로 나타나는 경우이다.
풍자소설인 ｢치숙｣과 태평천하에서 사용된 아이러니 특성을 뮤엑의 네 가지 요소 즉 ‘현실과 외관의 대조’, ‘자신에 찬 무지나 순진의 요소’, ‘거리감의 요소’, ‘미적 요소’를 중심으로 원천 텍스트와 목표 텍스트를 비교 분석하였다. ｢치숙｣의 TT1 Idiot Uncle에서는 아이러니의 네 가지 요소가 각각 약화된 형태로 번역되었다. 반면 TT2 Innocent Uncle는 TT1에 비해 네 요소 모두 최대한으로 번역되었다. 아이러니 요소는 각 요소가 개별적으로 작용하는 것이 아니라 각각의 요소가 유기체적 연관성을 갖고 있으므로, 어느 한 장치를 번역하지 않으면 다른 요소에도 영향을 미쳐 결과적으로 아이러니가 약화되고 그에 따라 풍자 효과도 약화될 수 있다. 한편 태평천하의 Peace Under Heaven에서는 ‘거리감의 요소’와 ‘미적 요소’의 번역이 잘 반영되지 않았다. 서술문에서 표현된, 윤 영감의 상스러운 비속어 등 서술자의 직접적인 개입을 대체로 번역하지 않아 거리감이 잘 드러나지 않았으며, 현재시제를 주로 과거시제로 번역하여 미적 요소에 해당하는 구어체 서술이 잘 드러나지 않았다. 아이러니 장치로 사용된 현재시제의 대화체나 자유간접발화 등의 서술 방식의 번역은 풍자대상을 형상화하고, 독자와 함께 공감대를 형성하여 풍자대상을 간접적으로 비판하는 데에 중요하다. 특히 구어체 서술의 번역은 장편소설에서 느슨해질 수 있는 삽화들의 나열을 응집하는 데에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper analyzes and investigates the translations from Korean into English of ironic elements in satirical fictions, "Innocent Uncle" and Peace Under Heaven. The analysis frameworks are four ironic elements provided by Muecke (1970): 'the contrast of reality and appearance,' 'the element of innocence or confident unawareness,' 'the element of detachment,' and 'the aesthetic element'. As the result of comparing the first and the second target text of "Innocent Uncle", the second is better than the first in that the four elements are adequately translated in it for ironic and satirical effects. And in Peace Under Heaven the element of detachment conveyed by free indirect speech, or narrator interference, and the aesthetic element by oral narration are usually not translated in the target text. This can be problematic in terms of ironic effects, since the four ironic elements are closely connected with each other and phenomena which have only some of these features will not be regarded as irony, as Muecke pointed out. We need to be aware that translating these narrations is important for embodying satirical and ironic characters in satirical fictions, and that especially oral narration helps a narrator to organically construct episodes.
