The bony palates of 78 male and 32 female korean dry skulls were analysed osteologically according to the ideas of J. Hassanali, S. Zivanovic and E. E. Westmoreland, and obtained the following results.
1. The mean palatine length of the total skulls was approximately 4.90cm(max.:5.8cm, min. 4.Ocm), the mean palatine breadth wsa 3.98cm (max. :4. 8cm, min. :3.2cm) and the mean palatine height was 1. 16cm(max.: 2.0cm, min.: 0.5cm).
2. The palatine index showed that 45.5% of the total skulls has leptostaphyline, 36.4: brachystaphyline and 18.2% mesostaphyline. The palatine height index showed that 52.7% of the total skulls has orthostaphyline, 40% chamestaphyline and 6.4% hypsistaphyline.
3. The incisive foramen was conical shape in 70.9%, round in 24.5% and 4.5% cylindrical. The mean anteroposterior diameter of the incisive foramen is 0. 86cm (max. : 1.6cm, min. 0.2cm) and the transverse diamter is 0.46cm (max. : 1. lcm, min.: 0.3em).
4. 65.4% of the total skulls found to have 4-6 lesser palatine foramina. The greater palatine foramen located at the level of the 3rd molar tooth in 91. 8% and others located at the level of the 2nd molar tooth.
5. In the 97.3% of the total skulls, the greater palatine foramen opened antero-medially, the remainder perpendiculary.
6. The longitudinal palatal grooves were branched. into 2 or more secondary grooves in about 95% of the total skulls and the terminal part of the grooves ends at the level of the 1st premolar tooth in 70.9%, and the 2nd premolar tooth in 26.4%.
7. The palatal spines appeared in 70.9% of the total skulls and the palatal crests were found in the all. 91.8% of the total skulls had no palatal bridge, only 1 case had 2 bridges and 8 cases had 1 bridge.
8. Of the total skulls, 32.7% had an arched transverse palatine suture, 58.2% were straight and 9. 1% were obliterated posteriorly. Only 1 case of incisive suture was found.
