      Silver ions have been widely used in various biomedical fields such as wound dressing materials, body wall repairs, augmentation devices, tissue engineering scaffolds. In this study, we prepared biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) nanofibrous mats containing silver nanoparticles by electrospinning technique and determined their antimicrobial activity. The average diameter of electrospun PHBV nanofibers decreased with the decrease in solution concentration and increase in electric potential and tip-to-collector distance. Electrospun structures revealed randomly aligned fibers with an average diameter of 380 nm. It could be controlled the electrospun fiber diameter by adjustment of electrospinning parameters, including solvent properties, concentration, applied voltage, solvent volatility and tip-to-collector distance. From the antimicrobial activity test, electrospun PHBV nanofibers containing 5000 ppm of silver nanoparticles showed more than 99.9% of bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. From the above results, electrospun biodegradable PHBV nanofibrous mat containing silver nanoparticles proved as an attractive antimicrobial materials. We believe that the electrospun nanofibrous mat containing silver nanoparticles holds great promise for various biomedical applications.
