로버트 프로스트 시의 역동적 자연세계 = Dynamic Movements in Robert Frost`s Nature Poetry

국문 초록 (Abstract)

20세기 미국의 대중시인이자 자연시인으로 손꼽히는 로버트 프로스트(Robert Frost)의 시에 등장하는 자연은 전통적인 낭만주의 시에서 보듯이 정적이고 전원적인 평화로움으로 인간에게 위로와 안락함을 제공하는 장이라기보다는 역동적인 에너지로 꿈틀대며 나름대로의 전략과 의지로 살아 움직이는 또 하나의 생명체로서의 자연이다. 인간의 삶을 감각적이고 관능적이며 활기차게 만들기도 하고 인간의 제한적 존재의 암울하고 비극적인 양상을 더욱더 부각시키기도 하는 프로스트의 자연세계는 화폭에 그려진 정적 세계가 아니라 영화관 스크린처럼 시시각각 변화하면서 그 속에 그려지는 인간 삶을 극적으로 조명하는 살아있는 영상으로서의 역동적인 세계이다. 프로스트의 자연시는 농부시인으로서 그가 그리려고 했던 뉴잉글랜드의 다양한 자연물처럼 생명력을 지닌 시로서 긴장과 움직임을 창출해 내는 역동적인 구조를 가진 현대적 감각의 자연시이다. 프로스트의 시에서 독자는 명상과 사색을 이끌어내는 평화롭고 고요한 낙엽이 쌓인 길, 눈 덮인 농가와 눈이 쌓여 사라진 길뿐 아니라, 고였던 물이 꽃을 피우고 녹음이 푸르른 여름 숲을 이루며, 거센 폭풍과 눈보라가 몰아치는 자연의 에너지로 충만한 역동적 시세계를 시각적이고 청각적인 효과와 더불어 만끽할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines dynamic movements in Robert Frost`s nature poetry which differentiate his poetry from that of other nature poets in the 19th-century Romantic tradition. To him, nature is neither an object of consistent philosophical concept nor something to be coherently speculated. Frost considers nature as a natural living thing involving streaming and undulant movement. Robert`s poetry suggests a transmission, flux, or exchanging of meanings rather than containing them. He departs from the restriction of traditional reflection and endeavors to overcome the limit of linear reflection. For Frost, nature is moving and changing and absolutely uncapturable; stasis is tragedy. Frost is a poet of process and of the imperfection of human and non-human nature; he believes in an ongoing life force. Frost`s tendency to emphasize connection and continuity leads him to feature sort of circularity in his poetry. Through dynamic movements in his nature poetry, Frost tries to capture shifting kaleidoscope that is contemporary American experience in the early 20th century.
