According to an article in the Electronic Times, ‘The Korea International Trade Association's Institute for International Trade recently published an analysis of the silver market in major countries the market size for the senior care industry in the United States is projected to reach approximately $3.5 trillion by 2025, and Japan, with the highest proportion of elderly population, is expected to see its silver market size exceed $800 billion by 2025.’ due to its highest proportion of the elderly population.’ The elderly population and the aging index are also on the rise, in parallel with rise of care facilities focusing on senior care. According to the statistic from Ministry of Health and Welfare, senior welfare facilities that includes home care along with nightly and weekend care increased from 4,821 in 2019 to 13,272 in 2022, an increase of 2.7times the original amount.
This research started from the question of whether or not the current care facilities were providing an adequate environment for a new generation of the elderly who has gone through a generational change and thus have different needs. It is estimated that changes to the design that reflect the experience of the new generation are sorely needed. Through literature reviews, case studies, and pilot studies, the aim is to analyze spaces to identify current problems and improvements, particularly focusing on elements of space design and color planning that affect emotions and psychology, and propose color schemes that help with depression.
This study analyzes six different senior care facilities that provides home care and nightly/weekend care and follows the Aged Welfare Act, especially in regards to color designs. It researches and analyzes living spaces of the elderly that has changed since the advent of COVID-19 and studies how color is applied in spaces and how it affects people psychologically from an architectural perspective.
The study was done with case analysis, literature studies, and pilot studies from both domestic and international senior care facilities, alongside providing basic data from color research and analyzing and researching for design that can assist the elderly on recovering from depression.
The foundation of this study is based upon the analysis of the interplay between colors and elements of environmental designs. This research also tries to confirm the correlation between depression, color, and association between the two by analyzing color, space, the elderly and their mental health.
This study is about color and spatial designs of senior care facilities. A study on color and spatial designs of senior care facilities may help improve the living environment of the elderly. According to the analysis of design theories and its effect on mood and well-being, nature may have close ties with emotional wellness. By using color palettes and color schemes that emulate the colors of nature, this study was conducted to further the research on spatial design and propose a design plan that help facilitate the recovery from depression.
