This study was to investigate the effect of interpersonal problems on depression, and mediating effect of experiential avoidance and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness. Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Korean Inventory of Interpersonal Problems Circumflex Scales (KIIP-SC), Korean Version of the Acceptance & Action Questionnaire (K-AAQ-II) and Korean Achievement Emotions Questionnaire (AEQ-K) were administered to 532 university students.
The major findings of the present study were as follow.
First, there were positive correlations among interpersonal problems, depression, experiential avoidance and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness. Also, there were positive correlation among depression, experiential avoidance and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness.
Second, interpersonal problems and sub-interpersonal problems have a positive affect on the depression.
Third, the relationship between interpersonal problems and depression were partly mediated by experiential avoidance. Also, experiential avoidance partly mediated the influence of all sub-interpersonal problems on the depression.
Fourth, interpersonal problems and depression were not mediated by ambivalence over emotional expressiveness. Also, the relationship between ‘moving away from people’ of interpersonal problems and depression were not mediated by ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, but the rest two areas of interpersonal problems and depression were partly mediated by ambivalence over emotional expressiveness.
The present study suggest that the interpersonal problems and sub-area of interpersonal problems have affect on depression, and depression is partly meditated by experiential avoidance in university students. Also, it is significant that this study shows ambivalence over emotional expressiveness partly mediates the influence of ‘moving toward people’ and ‘moving against people’ area of interpersonal problem on depression.
