Recently, because of global warming and energy depletion problems, Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs), which have no greenhouse gas emissions, have attracted much attention. In order to increase the fuel efficiency of FCEVs, the hydrogen storage tanks are made of plastics, instead of metals. Because they have a relatively high hydrogen permeability than metals, hydrogen leakage may occur. To lower the hydrogen permeation, many researchers have developed the barrier coating technology. In this article, we review the hydrogen permeation mechanism, various barrier coating technologies, and the evaluation methods of the barrier coatings.
