The pu rpose of this study was la investigate the different effects of two concept mapping techniques on student verbal recall performance and critical essay performance. Three sections of a college freshmen English composition course were randomly assigned to one of the three treatments-one in which each student con· structed concept maps using link and labels. a second in which students used links only. or a third in which student did not use concept maps. All of the 43 students who participated in the study were required to read two argumentative articles and la compose essays that anaiyzed the two articles. No significant differences were found in either the overall Quality of the essays produced or the verbal recall of the student measured by multiple choice test. Interpretation of the unexpected results was discussed. Need for future investigation lo further pursue this line of inquiry and la explore strategies of promoting student motivation in concept map· ping wap also suggested.
