국문 초록 (Abstract)

작은 공이 그림자를 드리우고 있는데, 작은 공보다 더 큰 공이 나타나서 큰 그림자를 만들고 작은 공의 그림자를 덮어 버렸다고 하자. 이때 작은 공 그림자는 사라졌는가, 아니면 큰 공 그림자의 부분 이 되었는가? 이것이 그림자 퍼즐이 던지는 물음이다. 소렌슨은 이에 대해 작은 공 그림자는 사라지고 큰 공 그림자만 남았다고 대답한다. 이 논문은 그림자 퍼즐에 관한 소렌슨의 대답을 자세히 분석한 후, 다 음을 보이고자 한다. (1) 소렌슨의 대답은 훌륭한 통찰력을 보여주지만 설득력이 없다. (2) 그림자 퍼즐은 인과에 관한 주요 이론들이 해결하 기 어려운 까다로운 문제를 제시한다. (3) ‘그림자’ 개념을 새롭게 정의 함으로써 그림자 퍼즐을 풀 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A small ball casts a shadow, but then a larger ball appears and casts a bigger shadow, which covers the shadow of the small ball. At this point, has the shadow of the small ball disappeared, or has it become part of the shadow of the larger ball? This is the question posed by what I shall call ‘the shadow puzzle’. Roy Sorensen answers that the shadow of the small ball has disappeared and only the shadow of the larger ball remains. This paper analyzes Sorensen’s account of the shadow puzzle in detail and then shows the following: (1) Sorensen’s account is extremely insightful but unconvincing. (2) The shadow puzzle presents a challenging problem that major theories of causation find difficult to resolve. (3) The shadow puzzle can be solved by redefining the concept of ‘shadow’.
