In this study we report the development of a new type of optical Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensor system for the purpose of structural health monitoring. We have compared the results obtained by using three kinds of FBG sensors with conventional electric sensors in bridge health monitoring. Strain, displacement and acceleration measurements were conducted to determine the health or condition of the bridge. These results show good agreements between FBG and electric sensors. A higher level of signal sensitivity was obtained in case of FBG as compared to the electric sensors. This study thus proves that FBG sensors are a promising alternative in structural health monitoring systems as they overcome the electrical noise drawback.
