파멜라 논쟁``의 승자: 18세기 영국 중간계급의 여성담론- 『파멜라』(1740) 대 『샤멜라』(1741)를 중심으로 = The Winner of the Pamela Controversy: The Middle Class`` Discourse on Women in 18th Century England - focusing on Pamela(1740) vs. Shamela(1741)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 ‘파멜라 논쟁’의 포문을 연 사뮤엘 리차드슨의 『파멜라』(1740)와헨리 필딩의 『샤멜라』(1741)를 분석하여, 논쟁 전체를 관통하는 18세기 중간계급의 여성담론을 추적하는 것이다. 친파멜라와 반파멜라로 갈라진 ‘파멜라 논쟁’의핵심쟁점은 파멜라가 보여준 미덕의 진정성 문제였다. 여주인공이 순수함과 순결함으로 신분상승까지 성취하는 모습을 그린『파멜라』에 대해 『샤멜라』는 그 미덕이 위선이라고 폭로한다. 이런 풍자와 대립 구도는 눈길을 끌기에 충분하지만 본고에서 주목하는 것은 오히려 이 두 작품의 공통분모이다. 당대의 ‘파멜라 논쟁’ 에서는 파멜라의 미덕이 진짜인가 가짜인가가 쟁점이었지만 본 연구자의 관심은‘그 미덕이란 무엇인가’이기 때문이다. 『파멜라』는 여성의 성공스토리를 기조로 하여 중간계급 남성의 신분상승 욕망을 충실히 반영하는 한편, 그 이면에는 순결한 처녀, 순종적이고 근검절약하는 아내, 섹슈얼리티가 제거된 어머니라는 중간계급의 이상적 여성상을 구현했다. 필딩은귀족의 시선으로 『파멜라』에 드러난 미덕의 위선과 신분상승 플롯을 신랄하게 풍자하고 있지만, 필딩의 샤멜라 역시 결국 여성의 미덕을 실천하지 못한 부도덕한여성일 뿐 여성의 미덕이란 곧 정절이라는 편협한 중간계급의 도덕성 자체를 의문시하지 않았다. 기실 ‘집안의 천사’로 상징되는 정숙하고 순결한 여성성 신화가 활개를 친 빅토리아 시기 여성담론을 감안해 볼 때 ‘파멜라 논쟁’에서 최종승자는 일찍부터 이런여성상의 전조를 보여준 파멜라임을 알 수 있다. 이는 반파멜라 진영의 힘이 약해서라기보다는 여성에 대한 그들의 태도 또한 친파멜라 진영과 크게 다르지 않았던 탓이 컸다. 필딩은 리처드슨이 그리는 여성상에는 직접적으로 도전하지 않았기때문에, 의도치 않게 근대적 여성성 신화가 탄생하는 데 공모했다고 볼 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to explain the middle class’ discourse on women in 18th century England by examining the main texts of ‘the Pamela Controversy’, Samuel Richardson’s Pamela (1740) and Henry Fielding’s Shamela (1741). The main dispute between “pro-” and “anti-Pamelists” was a controversy over the virtue of Pamela. While an innocent and chaste Pamela succeeded in raising her status, Shamela exposed her hypocrisy. I focus not on the differences but on the common points between the two texts. That is not ‘whether the virtue of Pamela is real?’ but rather, ‘What is that virtue?’ Pamela reflected the middle class’ desire for higher status on the basis of the success stories of women but also embodied the middle class’ ideal woman: an innocent virgin, a thrifty and obedient housewife, and an asexual mother. Indeed, in thinking that the myth of chaste and obedient women and the ideology of maternity were predominant in the 19th century, the winner of the Pamela Controversy was Pamela. I don’t think this was because anti-Pamelists were weaker than pro-Pamelists. The former’s view of women is no different from the latter’s view. Unintentionally, Fielding also took part in creating the modern myth of women for he did not question Richardson’s view of women but agreed with the womanly virtues that Richardson described.
