〈해당향〉 연구 - 소설사적 맥락을 중심으로 = A Study on Haedanghyang

국문 초록 (Abstract)

  〈Haedanghyang〉(해당향) has been assumed the Chinese classical novel. Because it contains a lot of sexual descriptions and episodes of monsters appearance. These characteristics differ from general Korean classical novels. Also there was a document that the novel was translated from Chinese into Korean in its transcriptional record. But its transcriptional record can not be an demonstrative basis, or its descriptions and episodes are not perfectly different from the traditional narrations in the Korean classical novel.<BR>  On the contrary, 〈Haedanghyang〉(해당향) has much more similarities than differences in comparison with the traditional narrations. The story is unfolded with priority given to a hero"s rising in the world and marriage. And a hero continually is helped out of troubles by the fantasy world. 〈Haedanghyang〉(해당향) shows many similarities with the Korean classical novels as basing on such common narrations and episodes.<BR>  But these similarities are not a simple imitation. A point of view about a personal desire is very fresh. Especially, there is an air of modernity taking a positive view of sexual desire in this novel. It can be the development of the Korean classical novel. The Korean classical novel had been dealt with personal desires as means strengthening morals. But 〈Haedanghyang〉(해당향) dealt with morals as means strengthening desires. The reason why this novel was appeared is related with the current background of the novel.<BR>  〈Haedanghyang〉(해당향) was transcribed in 1897-1899. In this period, it is assumed that the Korean classical novel was not created newly. There were various novels, but the readers who demanded freshness were not satisfied with them. In this transitional period, not only the Chinese writing novels of Korea but also the Chinese classical novels were translated into Korean. With this work, 〈Haedanghyang〉(해당향) was appeared. It tried to find fresh sources. Above all, 〈Haedanghyang〉(해당향) is authorized the literary merits, which shows the last form of the Korean classical novels. In the future, it needs to discuss 〈Haedanghyang〉(해당향) in the category of our Korean classical novels.
