The purpose of the study was to examine Paul Taylor`s works and the development of the company, and to provide the valuable resources to the future choreographers who try to bridge ballet and modern dance, and also to better understand and to find out the significances of the work --「Airs」through the analysis and re-evaluation of the work. The methodology for the study was to investigate the relevant dance literature, internet resources, and to analyze the related video materials. The study was limited to examine the references which had been written before 2006, and only the works considered to be related to the particular events among 123 works. The development of Paul Taylor Dance Company was analyzed chronologically, divided into three different stages. Paul Taylor has been called a genius, "a legend", "a cultural icon", "the reigning master of modern dance", "without question the greatest living American choreographer", "the greatest choreographer in the world", and so on. But he considers himself, above all, "a reporter", whose job is to observe us and record his impressions, and to rivet us with astonishing inventiveness, poignancy, and wit. Paul Taylor is the recipient of dozens of prestigious awards and honors. As prolific as ever after 50 years, he recently completed his 123th work. The Paul Taylor Dance Company has performed his works in over 60 countries and more than 450 cities. In March 2004, the Taylor Company launched a 50-state tour by November 2005 in celebration of the Company`s 50th Anniversary. The Company also presented a three-week season at City Center in New York for its 50th Anniversary that drew more than 25,000 people. Following the season`s final performance, more than 70 Taylor dancers from past and present joined Taylor for a bow on stage while more than 2,000 audience members showed their appreciation. As he acknowledged on a video tape to promote the Repertory Preservation Project, "My attitude is that I`ve been handed down so many wonderful things from the generation that came before me, it`s a duty to keep doing that for others." Undoubtedly, that duty will secure him a prominent place in America`s dance history. Among his 123 works, several of Taylor`s plotless works have been restaged by classical ballet companies around the world, the most frequently performed work is 「Airs」. 「Airs」 was world premiered by Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1978, which, three years later, joined the repertoire of American Ballet Theatre. After 「Airs」 first entered the repertory of ABT, Taylor`s works have been licensed for performance by more than 75 companies worldwide. 「Airs」 is one of the most highly respected Taylor`s dance works, which is considered to be well-combined the subtlety of ballet with the spontaneity of everyday gesture that made himself such a powerful force in modern dance. Thus, Paul Taylor bridges, as no other choreographer, ballet and modern dance by allowing internationally acclaimed ballet companies to acquire the works he creates on his own celebrated troupe.
