발레리아 루이셀리의 『잃어버린 아이들을 위한 아카이브』에 나타난 아카이브의 의미 = Meaning of archive in Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive

국문 초록 (Abstract)

발레리아 루이셀리의 『잃어버린 아이들을 위한 아카이브』는 중미 출신 아동 난민 문제를 다룬 작품이다. 작가는 아동 난민 문제가 미디어에 의해 소비되는 비극적 소재로 남는 것을 비판하는 동시에 여행 서사의 전통과 접목시킴으로써 아카이브라는 개념을 문학적으로 확장시킨다. 본고에서는 우선 아카이브로 기능하기 위한 소설의 구성 방식을 고찰함으로써 ‘잃어버린 아이들’에 관한 다양한 스토리텔링이 어떻게 복합적으로 이뤄지고 있는지 논의한다. 또한 여행 서사를 근간으로 픽션과 증언 문학의 넘나듦을 통해, 문학적 상상력과 자유로움을 누리고, 동시에 아동 난민 문제에 대한 윤리적 경각심을 환기하고 있음을 살펴본다. 아카이브의 목적은 궁극적으로 기억하는 방식에 대한 탐구이다. 그 결과로 탄생한 이 소설 자체가 잃어버린 아이들을 위한 다큐멘터리이자 아카이브로 기능함을 보여준다. 따라서 본고에서는 이 소설이 탐구하고 있는 아카이브의 형식, 기록에 대한 정의, 또한 상실과 망각에 대한 두려움 등을 두루 논의해 보고자 한다.

Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive deals with the issue of children refugees from Central America. Criticizing the reality that this crisis is being used as tragic material consumed by the media, the author expands the concept of archive by combining its plot with the canonical tradition of travel narratives. This essay thus looks at the structure and form of the archive being explored in the novel, definition of documentary, and fear of loss and oblivion. The author creates a new archive of original meaning without losing literary imagination and freedom to provide an ethical awakening to the problem of children refugees. The novel itself, created as a result of its exploration of the way it remembers historically forgotten and lost people, shows that it functions as a documentary and archive for lost children.
