Purpose of this thesis "Mortification of the Deeds of the Body" is the works of the Holy Spirit, total responsibility and the identity of the believers.
Apostle Paul says that it is an invitation of establishment in "Mortification of the Deeds of the Body." For instance, it is a relationship between the establishment of the Holy Spirit and the believers' responsibility in "Paradoxical Balance." Therefore "Mortification of the Deeds of the Body" is the privilege and the responsibility of the renewed and rebirthed believers following the Holy Spirit in Jesus Christ.
If we do not understand "faith" and "works" in the paradoxical balance "Mortification of the Deeds of the Body", we can fall to Antinomianism(Rom 6:1) or have a faith without a deed(James 2:14), and lose a morality or drastic meritorism finally. Therefore, it is necessary to give a theological explanation about "faith" and "works" of "Mortification of the Deeds of the Body." Thus, this study is to solve these matters with the following theological reasons.
First, we reconfirm that "Mortification of the Deeds of the Body" is not the reward of the believers but the basic of unification of the Christ. By uniting with the Christ, the believers are free from the sin and belong to God. Hence they ultimately become holy and experience a conversion in living life styles, not under the law but under his grace.
The believers have the physical bodies still exposed to influence of sin which is finite, weak, and consuming. In spite of this limitation, the believers are to be discriminated as 'Holy Being' so they are in the control of Grace. But, apostle Paul developed the "Identity of believers from just being united with Christ" to "the new life following Holy Spirit." Apostle Paul calls it "Mortification of the Deeds of the Bodys."
This action of Paul is related to paradoxical balance where not only Holy Spirit but also the believers subjectivity coexist. The purpose of balance that Paul mentioned means that the deeds of believers can not be an alternative of morality or legalism. Rather, "Mortification of the Deeds of the Body" is theology of Grace and Faith.
Secondly, Paul emphasizes the responsibility and duty of the believers, although it is definite that the Mortification of the Deeds is in the works of Holy Spirit. Then how can we explain the responsibility of the believers and power of religion in Sanctification?
Some people disgraded to moralist or Antinomianism(Romans 6:1) Legalist(Romans 7:24). Since they ignored divine sovereign power and responsible relationship of the believers. The relation of paradoxical balance according to the believer's duty and responsibility can be explained by the indicative and imperative. In other words, indicative will show the life of obedience and dedication to God in imperative. Identity of the believers is not a progressive process which can be completed automatically in the tension of dialectic: already, not yet or none, rather, this allows the believers to participate in the "Mortification of the Deeds of the Body" which the believers are united with Christ and free from sin so they become servants of righteousness who belongs to God.
In these circumstances, "Mortification of the Deeds of the Body" should give a positive emphasis eschatologically.
Thirdly, Paul's indicative means the aggressive and holy life with "offering yourselves to God as instruments of righteousness"(Rom 6:13) and "putting to death the misdeeds of the body by the Spirit."(Rom 8:13). The Holy Spirit is the perfect one that can die out the deeds of the body while he lets the believers participate as a subjective one.
In the respect of these, the believers' duty and responsibility which can die out "the Deeds of the Body" is enough to express the christian life of ethic/salvation and morality.
