한영 문학 번역에 드러난 직유의 번역

국문 초록 (Abstract)

비유는 문학작품의 미학을 표현하는 수사로서 작가는 비유를 통해 고유 양식을 보여준다. 문학 작품에서 비유 표현이 미적 기능을 충족하기 위해서는 의미의 함축성과 원작의 이미지를 포함하고 있어야 한다. 그러므로 비유가 갖고 있는 의미의 함축성이나 이미지를 제대로 번역하는 일은 작품의 미학을 살리는데 중요한 도구가 된다.
이 연구에서는 한국 단편소설에 드러난 직유 표현이 어떻게 영역되었는지 살펴보았다. 원문의 비유 표현 중에서 보조관념에 고유 표현, 문화적 표현이 포함된 텍스트를 자료로 선정하고, 보조관념의 번역 방식을 서술하였다.
분석 방식은 직유의 형식이 번역문에 반영되었는지의 여부를 살펴보는 형식적 등가의 관점, 그리고 직유의 번역 내용을 살펴보는 내용적 등가로 구분하였다. 내용적 등가의 경우 비유의 보조관념이 번역문에 반영되었는지의 여부를 중심으로 축어적 번역과 번역자가 개입한 자유로운 번역으로 구분하였다.
이 분석을 바탕으로 계량적 결과를 도출하고, 그 결과가 주는 의미를 논의하고, 직유의 바람직한 번역 방식을 제시하였다. 축어적 번역은 대상독자가 상상력을 발휘해서 스스로 함의를 찾아낼 수 있게 한다는 점에서 바람직하다. 그러나 번역자가 소통을 위해 개입할 경우도 있다. 분석 결과 드러난 번역자의 개입 방식은 메시지 전달, 상위어 사용, 기능적 등가추구, 다른 단어로 대치하는 방법을 적용하였음이 드러났다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A figure of speech is a rhetorical device to represent aesthetics of literary works and to reflect author"s unique style. The figure of speech in literary texts, which includes implications and images, fulfills the aesthetic function of the work. Therefore, from an aesthetic point of view, it is important for a translator to transfer appropriately the implication and the image into the target text.
This study examines how similes of Korean short stories were translated into English translation. Firstly, the researcher selects the source texts with typical Korean expressions and cultural elements in the supplementary notions, and then describes the translating method.
The analytical method are categorized from the viewpoint of formal and semantic equivalence. The former examines how the simile form is reflected in the target text. The latter describes how the source text is translated. For semantic analysis, the researcher sorted the data into literary translation or free translation based on whether the supplementary notions were preserved in the target texts or not.
The researcher draws the quantitative conclusion based on the results of the analysis, discusses its implication, and suggests alternative translations. Literary translation is desirable in that it allows the target readers to let their imaginations run free and find implications by themselves. In some cases however, translators intervene to communicate with the target readers more effectively. The analysis showed that methods used by translators for intervention are as follows; delivering message, using hyperonyms, pursuing functional equivalence, and replacing other vocabularies.
