Th17 cells are a specialized subset of CD4? Tcells that are essential in driving inflammation duringautoimmune disease and infection through a signaturecytokine IL-17. Th17 cells have been found in varioushuman cancers. The function of these cells in cancers ishighly context-dependent; both tumor-promoting andtumor-suppressing activity have been reported. IL-17 andIL-22, Th17-derived cytokines, influence the tumormicroenvironment by directly promoting transformed cellproperties and neighboring stromal cell activity. Thesecytokines are also involved in regulation of the immunesystem by modulating the activities of myeloid cells and Tcells. These findings suggest that Th17 cells and theircytokines are a key mediator of cancer development, representinga potential target for cancer therapy. Herein, Ireview recent preclinical studies on the function of Th17cells and IL-17 in cancer and discuss possible therapeuticapproaches to harness Th17 cells for cancer immunotherapy.
