This study aims to analyze the names of Dong:Li in Daegu-dohobu Bonbu region. The research focuses on three things ; the history of the place name change, the factors of naming and the types of the name change. The results are as follows.
First, according to 「Daegubusa」 which records the place names in 1910 and 「Hoguchongsu(1789)」, the names of Dong:Li in the researched area increased in number, from 46 to 66. This change was due to the increase in population and the division of villages. During this period, the number of houses increased from 4,509 to 7,183, which was an increase of 60%. Also, more Dongs:Lis were born as the villages were divided. These Dongs:Lis were named by using prefixes or suffixes. The affixes were generally related to two things ; the relative position, such as 上:中:下(upper:middle:lower), 內:外(in:out), or the transition, such as 一:二(one:two), 新:舊(new:old).
Second, under the rule of Japanese imperialism, the revision of administrative districts and their names was carried out on a large scale. In 1911, Dongsangmyon and Seosangmyon were unified into Daegumyon. In the same year, a lot of Dongs, mainly including Japanese residence, were renamed Japanese names. In 1914, Bu:Gun System was abolished. As a result, Daegumyon was renamed Daegubu and other 27Myon were merged into Dalsunggun. It is suggested that this revision had two purposes. One was to strengthen the colonial rule over Korea and the other, the ultimate goal, was to obliterate the national culture.
Third, in 1947, the place names were revised again to get rid of Japanese names. The revised names could be put in three types. One was the name that remained the same. Another was what recovered the original name. The other was what got a new name, which accounted for about 50% among them. Meanwhile, the population growth by industrialization and urbanization made the number of Dongs increase.
Fourth, for this study, the factors of place naming were analyzed. In 「Hoguchongsu」, it was found that many place names were related to two things ; topographies in natural features and citadels in artificial features. In 「Daegubusa」, the names meaning relative position appeared often. For example, words, such as 上:中:下, 內:外 could be found easily in the place names. In 「Daegusisa」, a lot of place names were related to the transition, like 一:二, 新:舊.
Fifth, the study classified 46 Lis names in 「Hoguchongsu」as three types ; sustained, transformed and extinct type. The sustained type was found more frequently in rural than urban district. That's because the former has much more natural features, which can be factors of naming, than the latter. The transformed type was found both in rural district and in urban district. In former case, it was related to the change of Chinese orthography. But in latter case, to the division of villages. The extinct type means Japanese name that was compulsorily used during colonial period. Because the revision of the place name by Japan was done around urban district, more extinct names were found in the urban district than in the rural district.
