The purpose of this article is to study John Calvin’s soteriology through the interrelationship of justification and sanctification. Since the Reformation, justification and sanctification has been emphasized at the center of Protestant redemption. The issue of interrelationship between justification and sanctification is not just an ethical issue of believers, but is directly related to the issue of soteriology. This is theological theme that forms the core of Calvins soteriology.
Therefore, this article started with the first, “Mediator Jesus Christ”, to study the interrelationship of Calvin’s justification and sanctification. This is because the characteristics of Calvin’s justification and sanctification based on the theory of the mediator Jesus Christ. Christ’s person is the basis of his work. Person and work are inseparable. Second, this article studied to ‘the union with Christ.’ ‘The union with Christ’ manifests itself in twofold grace-justification and sanctification. Third, it reveals the meaning of soteriology that Calvin was trying to say through “the interrelationship of justification and sanctification.” The interrelationship between justification and sanctification means the simultaneity and graduality of the relationship between Justification and sanctification. According to Calvin, therefore, there cannot be justification without sanctification, nor sanctification without justification.
