King of Jung-Jo(正祖) stressed the importance of character studies saying `Gaining knowledge by the study of things(格物致知), secret of learning, was based on characters`. When 『Kyujangjunwoon(奎章全韻)』 was finished in 1792, he ordered his subjects to proofread the book. Also, he gave his subjects 『Moonjachaekmoon(文字策問)』and discussed with them about various problems of chinese character studies. This study was conducted on such a 『Moonjachaekmoon(文字策問)』of King of Jung-Jo(正祖) and measures of Lee,Deok-moo(李德懋), Ryu,Duk-gong(柳得恭), Park,Je-ka(朴齊家) and Lee,Seo-ku(李書九), Yoon,Haeng-im(尹行恁) against it. Also, this paper aims to look at the contents and significance of then-current character studies. Through this study, the significance that could be obtained is as follows. First, in accordance with diversification and openness of schools which started from the latter period of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮) period, the importance of Xiaoxue(小學) alienated from the academic traditions centering on existing Xinglixue(性理學) became influential. Second, books on major character studies of Han dynasty(漢), Song dynasty(宋), Ming dynasty(明), Qing dynasty(淸) were quoted, and major problems of the character study history of Chinese many generations were discussed. Especially, this paper focused on discussions of scholars, such as Xu-shen(許), Zheng-qiao(鄭樵), Dai-zhen(戴震), etc. who were representative of Han dynasty(漢), Song dynasty(宋), Qing dynasty(淸). third, Lee,Deok-moo(李德懋), Ryu,Duk-gong(柳得恭), Park,Je-ka(朴齊家) and Lee,Seo-ku(李書九), Yoon,Haeng-im(尹行恁) had a certain degree of understanding of character studies and were themselves able to evaluate the results of existing studies. Fourth, King of Jung-Jo(正祖) and various subjects would reconfirm the concrete contents and significance of existing theories and submit their own opinions from the critical standpoint.
