The Influence of Baptist Distinctive Theologies on the Mission History of the Korea Baptist Convention : 침례교신학이 한국침례교선교역사에 미친 영향

국문 초록 (Abstract)

침례교의 역사는 그 시작부터 선교의 역사라고 할 수 있다. 역사적으로, 영국침례교나 미국침례교는 ‘위대한 명령(the Great Commission)’을 그들의 교단을 구성하는 주요한 이유로 여겼고, 그에 헌신해 왔다. 기독교 한국침례회(the Korea Baptist Convention)는 이러한 역사적인 전통을 따르고 있다. 기독교한국침례회의 역사는 캐나다 독립선교사였던, 말콤 C. 펜윅이 한국에 도착한 1889년 12월 8일부터 시작한다. 2015년 현재, 기독교 한국침례회는 2,800여개 교회들과 800,000여 성도들로 이루어지고 있으며, 올해로 125주년을 맞이하고 있다.
그간 한국침례교 역사에 대해서는 서로 다른 관점에서 많은 해석들이 이루어져왔다. 그러나 선교의 관점에서 한국침례교 역사를 해석하려는 시도는 거의 없었던 것이 사실이다. 본 논문은 선교라는 관점에서 한국침례교 역사를 이해하고자 한다. 침례교는 그 시작부터 ‘위대한 명령’이 핵심적 가치였었다. 따라서, 한국침례교를 이 ‘위대한 명령’에 얼마나 순종하고 있는가에 따라 평가하는 것은 가치 있는 일일 것이다. 본 논문은 한국침례교 선교의 중흥과 쇠퇴를 살펴보고, 침례교 신학의 어떤 이슈들이 각 중흥기와 쇠퇴기에 놓여있는지를 살피고 있다. 즉, 침례교만의 독특한 어떤 신학이 한국침례교 선교에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 물어보는 것이다. 본 논문의 핵심은 침례교의 신학이 한국침례교의 선교발전에 얼마나 중요한 영향을 미쳤는지를 살펴보는 것이다.
선교의 현장에서 신학이란 등뼈(backbone)와 같은 역할을 한다. 올바른 신학은 선교사들로 해외선교에 인생을 걸게 만든다. 한국침례교는 지난 125년간 선교를 위해 노력해왔는데, 지금이야말로 선교 신학이라는 관점에서 지난날들의 노력들을 재 평가해 볼만한 시점이다. 침례교에는 몇 가지 독특한 신학들이 있으며, 이러한 침례교의 신학들이 한국침례교 선교의 발전에 긍정적인 때론 부정적인 영향을 끼쳐온 것도 사실이다. 침례교만의 독특한 신학이라고 할 수 있는 것은 크게 두 가지로 이야기될 수 있다. 하나는 ‘자유의 신학(Theology of Freedom)’이다. 자유의 신학은 4가지 영역으로 나뉘어져 구성되는데, ‘영혼의 자유,’ ‘성경의 자유,’ ‘교회의 자유,’ ‘종교의 자유’가 그것들이다. 또 다른 하나는 ‘협력의 신학(Theology of Cooperation)’이다. 침례교는 구원론에 있어서 다양한 견해들을 모두 수용하지만, 선교라는 대의를 위해서는 서로 협력할 줄 알았다. 비록 자유의 정신과 협력의 정신이 서로 상반되는 듯한 성질을 가지고 있지만, 침례교의 역사는 이러한 두 신학 사이의 조화와 상생의 과정을 통해 발전해 왔다. 이러한 두 가지의 신학들은 침례교의 정체성과 선교역사를 형성하는데 대단히 중요한 역할을 해왔다.
한국침례교 역사는 ‘자립의 단계(self-surviving),’ ‘자치의 단계(self-governing),’ ‘자신학화(self-theologizing)’의 단계로 나뉘어질 수 있다. 각각의 단계들에서, 한국침례교회의 선교는 위에서 언급한 침례교의 독특한 신학들에 지대한 영향을 받아온 것은 부인할 수 없는 사실이다. 한국침례교인들은 자유를 위해 투쟁해왔다. 역사속의 모든 다른 침례교인들처럼, 그들도 종교의 자유를 얻기 위해 일본제국 식민정권과 싸웠었다. 또, 그들은 성경의 자유(성경 해석의 자유), 교회의 자유(지역교회의 자치성)를 얻기 위해 남침례교 선교사들의 영향력으로부터 독립된 존재가 되기 위해 노력해 오기도 했다. 한국침례교인들은 ‘각각의 교회는 외부 권력의 간섭이나 강제로부터 자유로워져야만 한다’는 것을 강조했다. 그러나 이들이 자유를 위해서 투쟁하기만 한 것은 아니다. 선교를 위해서, 한국침레교인들은 자유와 협력을 함께 조화시킬 줄도 알았다.
한국침례교는 진정한 자유를 얻기위해 적어도 100여년이 넘는 세월을 보내왔다. 이제, 한국침례교인들은 성경을 해석하는데 자유로우며, 그들의 미래를 위해 전략을 선택하는데 있어서 자유롭다. 이제는 그들 스스로 자유로이 토론하고 그들 스스로 자유로이 결정할 수 있다. 그렇기에 지금이야말로 ‘자유의 신학’에 대한 지난 100여년간의 관심과 투쟁을 ‘협력의 신학’에 대한 관심으로 돌리는 적기가 아닌가 싶다. 한국침례교인들이 선교라는 큰 대의를 위해 협력하는 법을 더 적극적으로 배울 때 한국침례교의 선교는 다시 한번 크게 도약할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

From the beginning, the history of the Baptists is a history of mission. Historically, both England Baptists and America Baptists have shared the strong commitment to the Great Commission as the primary reason of consisting a denomination. The Korea Baptist Convention is following this historical tradition. The history of the KBC has begun in December 8, 1889 when Malcom C. Fenwick, an independent Canadian missionary, visited Korea. The KBC just enjoyed its 125th year anniversary with about 800,000 members of 2,800 churches in the year of 2015.
There have been many interpretations of the history of the KBC with different points of view. However, it is a rare attempt to interpret the history of the KBC from the perspective of mission. This thesis is another attempt to understand the KBC history in view of mission. Since the Great Commission became the core value of Baptists from the beginning, it would be right to evaluate Korea Baptists in light of their obedience to the Great Commission. This thesis tries to discover the increase and decrease of Korean Baptist mission and the factor that lies behind, namely, Baptist theology. This study asked what kind of Baptist distinctive theology influenced the KBC mission. This thesis focused on how Baptist theology played an important role in the development of the mission of the KBC.
Theology in mission field is like a backbone. Proper theology makes missionaries committed to lifelong foreign ministry. The KBC has spurred the foreign mission effort for the last 125 years. Now is the right time to review the last efforts in the sight of the theology of mission. Some distinctive Baptist theologies have played positive and negative roles in the development of the KBC’s mission. There are two main theologies as Baptist distinctive identity: Theology of Freedom and Theology of Cooperation. Theology of Freedom is consists of Soul Competency (Soul Freedom), Bible Freedom, Church Freedom, and Religious Freedom. Each theology has played an important role to create Baptist identity and mission. All these theologies became the driving force of the KBC mission, too.
The KBC history can be divided as Self-Surviving, Self-Governing, and Self-Theologizing period. In each period, the KBC mission has been greatly influenced by Baptist distinctive theology. Korea Baptists had fought for Freedom. As other Baptists in history, they fought for Religious Freedom against the Japanese Government. They fought for Bible Freedom and Church Freedom against missionaries. They emphasized that each church should be autonomous without external power’s interruption with coercion. However, with regards to mission, they wanted to enjoy freedom and cooperation at the same time.
The KBC spent more than 100 years to obtain genuine freedom. They are now free to interpret the Bible and free to choose their strategy for the future. They are free to discuss and decide for themselves. It is now time to turn their concern to Theology of Cooperation for mission, the precious Baptist heritage. When they learn the power of cooperation, the mission of the KBC will once again flourish.
