국문 초록 (Abstract)

예술 활동은 세계를 파악하는 인식의 창이다. 따라서 예술 활동은 변화하는 상황을 반영해야 한다. 오늘날 그 어느 때보다도 급변하는 사회 속에서 살아가는 인간들은 그러한 변화에 적응하려 노력하지만 변화의 속도를 채 따라가지 못한다. 여기에서 고도 물질 문명으로부터의 인간 소외가 발생하는데, 소외된 인간은 무엇을 통해서든지 위안을 받으려 한다. 예술 활동이 이러한 현실을 반영할 때 인간은 예술 작품을 통하여 자신이 처한 현실을 직시할 수 있을 것이다.
그러므로 본인의 작업은 현실에 대한 관심에서부터 출발한다. 여기서 말하는 현실은 고정불변의 객관적이고 보편적인 개념이 아니다. 그것은 인식 주체인 인간에 의해 규정된 상대적 이고 주관적인 개념이다. 그리고 현실을 파악하는 인간의 인식 능력은 사회적, 역사적 측면과 밀접한 상관 관계 속에서 형성된다. 이러한 맥락에서 본인의 작업에는 본인의 개별적 경험에 의한 사회적 현실에 대한 인식이 역설적 방법을 통해 반영되어 있다.
한편 예술이 사회를 파악하는 인식의 창이라면, 예술에는 사회적 기능이 있다. 따라서 본인의 작업은 본인의 경험과 밀접하게 관련된 사회적 현실을 반영한다. 본인의 작품은 주로 부 정적 측면 즉 환경 오염과 물질주의, 비인간화 등을 비판적으로 다루는데, 주로 이미지 변형을 통해 상징적이고 은유적인 방법을 사용한다. 이것은 현실의 모순을 충분히 인지하지만, 그것에 대한 직접적인 표현 방식보다는 우의적이고 감성적인 표현 방식을 선호하기 때문이다.
본인의 작품은 내용적인 면에서는 일상적인 사회적 현실을 다루는데, 특히 비판적인 관점을 갖고 환경 문제에 초점을 맞춘다. 그리고 형식적인 면에서는 비교적 구체적인 형상으로부터 추상적인 형태에 이르기까지 그 폭이 넓다. 이러한 표현 방식은 현실에서 동시에 벌어지는 여러 상황에 대한 관심을 표현하기에 적합한 방법을 찾고자 하는 의도에서 비롯된 것이다. 또한 단순한 형식의 변화만이 아닌 이미지 변형에 의한 역설적 표현 방법도 사용한다.
조형적 요소를 구체적으로 보면, 우선 대상이 되는 소재들은 그 자체의 특성보다는 비판적인 생각을 나타내려는 의도에서 선택되었는데, 변형과 상징을 통해 표현된다. 색채 사용에 있어서는, 물질 표면의 색만이 아닌 현실에 대한 감성을 드러내는 색상을 사용하는데, 가라앉은 저채도와 중채도의 색을 많이 사용한다. 그리고 촉각적이면서 변화 있는 재료를 사용함으로써 풍부한 감성을 전달하려 한다.
다소 혼란스럽게 보여질 수 있지만 결국 본인 작업의 전반적인 주제는 현실에 대한 비판적 시각을 표현하는 것이다. 그리고 본인은 이러한 비판적 시각이 상징적이고 은유적인 성격의 작품으로도 표현될 수 있다고 본다. 본인은 작업의 심도 있는 표현을 위해서는 단지 표피적인 상황의 반영과 감정의 분출에 그쳐서는 안 된다고 본다. 그리고 현실에 대한 총괄적이고 비판적인 시각을 유지하고 그것을 표현하기 위해서는 기존 방식에 얽매이지 않는 더욱 적절하고 창의적인 형식과 매체 사용이 요구된다고 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Artistic activity is a kind of cognitive window through which we recognize our world. Therefore, it should reflect ever- changing circumstances. Our human-beings, who are living in a rapidly changing society, try to adapt themselves to the change, however, they are not able to catch the speed of the change and they become alienated from a highly materialistic civilization. This alienation makes people try to find their comfort from whatever they are. Human-beings will be able to face the realities, which they belong to, through art works when they reflect those realities.
Therefore, my work starts from my interest in realities. The term reality here is not the concept that is unchangeable, objective, and universal. Rather, the term should be understood as the relative and subjective concept regulated by human as the subject of cognition. This cognitive power is formed and developed in the close interactions with the social and historic aspects. Using paradoxical method, I reflect in my works how I recognize social realities I experience.
If art is a cognitive window through which we recognize our society, it necessarily has a social function. 1herefore, my works reflect social realities closely related to my own experiences. Dealing with the negative aspects of our society such as environmental pollution, materialism, and dehumanization, I use the symbolic and metaphorical methods through the transfiguration of images in my works. This is because I prefer allegorical and emotional way of expression to the direct expression of realities even though I fully recognize the contradiction of realities.
With regard to their contents, my works deal with common social realities, partictl1arly focusing on environmental problems in a critical view, My works are very broad in their forms, ranging from relatively realistic images to abstract forms. These methods are utilized in an effort to find some proper ways to reveal the diverse situations that are simultaneously shown in a real world. In addition, I not only change forms but also use the paradoxical way of expression through the transfiguration of images.
When we examine the specific elements of forms, we should keep in mind the fact that the materials, which are used as the objects, have been selected not because of their unique qualities but because of their effectiveness in expressing critical perspectives which are accentuated by some transformation and symbolism. In the use of colors, I try to express not only the real colors of the surface of materials but also the sensitivity toward realities in the low-color-scale that wears the tints of gloomy. In addition, I focuses on delivering the feeling of opulent sensitivity by using tangible and various materials.
This may be seen chaotic, however, the main purpose of my work is to express some critical view toward realities as they are. And I think that this critical view could be expressed effectively in the symbolic and metaphoric ways. For a profound expression of ideas, it is important not to be seized by merely superficial reflection of situations and emotional explosion. In addition, I believe that I need to use more suitable and creative forms and media beyond the existing methods in order to keep maintaining and expressing a comprehensive and critical view toward realities.
