공공디자인으로서 장소-특정성 공공미술의 발전방향에 관한 연구 = A Study on the Development of the Site-specific Public Art in Public Design

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

When an art work comes to urban space, "a piece of inappropriate work incompatible to the logical connection and identity of a site" can not receive right evaluation of its value as public art. There may be various causes concerning the problems of public art but this study established a premise with a focus on the relationship of work and site that art that extremely emphasizes internal self-control and artist's originality emphasized by modernism is the result of 'no consideration for the suitability of a site or response of citizens'. First of all, the changes of site-specific notions and effects of surrounding art in the artistic flow through literature review were examined and the methods of the operation of art and a site and rising issues were arranged through site research. In particular, it reviewed the roles and functions of public art according to the characteristics of "Place-making' connected to public design and its roles to improve spatial quality and selected Site-specific work of the type recently expanded based on a site and project public art as study cases and analyzed the correlation of work and site, human beings and environment. In addition, the non-physical situation integrated with physical space was examined to rediscover the potentiality of public art about the future urban environment and searched for a consistent development direction. In this connection, it is hoped that this study can be a chance to be utilized as basic data useful to search for countermeasures for the current problems of public art and furthermore to establish a plan and a direction of public design.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미술이 도시공간으로 나왔을 때 “장소의 맥락과 정체성”에 맞지 않는 “나 홀로” 작품은 공공미술로서의 가치를 옳게 평가 받을 수 없다. 공공미술의 문제점으로 여러 가지 원인이 있겠지만 본 연구에서는 모더니즘이 강조한 내적 자율성과 작가의 독창성만을 지나치게 강조한 미술은 ‘장소의 적합성이나 시민의 공감을 고려하지 않은 결과다‘라는 점을 전제로 작품과 장소의 관계를 논의의 중심으로 설정하였다. 먼저 문헌연구를 통하여 미술사적 흐름 속에서 장소 특정성 개념의 변화와 주변 미술과의 영향 등을 알아보고 현장연구를 통하여 미술과 장소가 작용하는 방식과 대두된 쟁점들을 정리하였다. 특히, 공공디자인과 연계된 “장소 만들기” 특성에 따른 공공미술의 역할과 기능은 무엇이며 그것이 공간의 질적인 향상을 위해서 어떠한 역할을 했는지를 살펴보고 최근 장소를 기반으로 확장된 형태의 장소 특정성 작품과 프로젝트형 공공미술 작품을 연구사례로 선정하여 작품과 장소, 인간과 환경의 상관관계를 분석하였다. 또한 물리적인 공간과 통합되는 비물리적인 상황을 함께 살펴봄으로써 향후 도시환경에 대한 공공미술의 잠재성을 재발견하고 지속적인 발전방향을 모색하였다. 이에 본 연구가 공공미술의 당면문제에 대한 대처방안을 도출하고 더불어 공공디자인의 계획과 방향을 설정 할 때도 유용한 기초자료로 활용되는 계기가 되길 바란다.
