“Floating Voters” in the Honeymoon Election of Korea

This study aims to empirically analyze the effect of the honeymoon
election in Korea and its political implications, particularly
through a consideration of floating voters’ behavior between the
17th Presidential Election and the 18th National Assembly Election.
Korean political parties still have a very weak foundation
and low level of mass support. There are other problems of identity,
including frequent name changes due to party mergers and
splits around election time. However, after analysis of panel survey
data and the modeling of various types of floating voters, it
can be cautiously said that in the honeymoon election floating
voters seemed to base their votes on personal preference for
political leaders rather than voting along party lines, and that the
honeymoon effect is relatively restrained in the Korean electoral process, where political parties are not firmly institutionalized.
The majority of floating voters changed their mind and supported
the major opposition party, United Democratic Party in the
18th National Assembly Election, as compared with the 17th
Presidential Election held a few months earlier.
