교육행정학 연구에서 다층모형 활용실태와 비판적 성찰 = Actual Condition and Critical Reflection of Multi-level Analysis in Korean Educational Administration

In the field of educational administration, the main research subjects of which are educational organizations, the use of multi-level model that can predict causal relationships by reflecting nested or hierarchical organizational characteristics is gradually increasing. This study aims to analyze how the multi-level model has been used in the previous studies and to critically reflect on its use in the study of educational administration. For this purpose, this study first investigated research papers published in the The Journal of Educational Administration for the last 22 years (2000~2022) (Volume 20, No. 1 ~ Volume 40, No. 2) and selected 58 studies adopting multi-level models. Analyses were conducted by 9 criteria established based on theoretical backgrounds, research methods, analyses, and result presentations. The results of analyses show that the research using the multi-level model is rapidly increasing in higher education as well as elementary and secondary education. In particular, that 74% of research papers analyzed in the study used secondary data indicates a tendency that as the longitudinal data of metropolitan and provincial offices of education further expanded, the use of the multi-level method increased more. This study also found that most of the research analyzed in the study did not provide specific theoretical grounds for variables. Only 17 papers (29%) presented research models. In addition, there were only a few papers that presented the minimum number of cases in a group, handling of missing values, centering, reliability estimation, and model fit, all of which are sensitive issues in multi-level models. This study suggests preparing guidelines in the Korean Educational Adminstration Society for the use of the multi-level model, which will enable the constructive and rational use of it, especially considering that the importance of the multi-level model is gradually being emphasized, and large-scale education-related data is being collected accordingly.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

교육조직을 주된 연구대상으로 삼는 교육행정학 분야에서 내재된(nested) 또는 위계화된(hierarchical) 조직특성을 반영하여 인과관계를 예측할 수 있는 다층모형의 활용이 점차 늘고 있다. 이 연구는 교육행정학 연구에서 다층모형이 어떻게 활용되는지 실태를 분석하고, 이를 비판적으로 성찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 ‘교육행정학연구’ 2000년 20권 1호부터 2022년 40권 2호까지 22년 동안 수록된 다층모형을 활용한 논문 58편을 대상으로 이론적 근거, 연구방법, 분석 및 결과보고 분석영역 9가지 분석 준거를 활용하여 현황 및 실태를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 다층모형을 활용한 논문은 초·중등분야뿐만 아니라 고등교육분야에서도 최근 급속히 늘었고, 특히 2차 자료를 활용한 논문이 74%로 교육청 종단자료 생성이 확대되면서 다층모형 활용도 증가하는 경향을 나타냈다. 하지만 논문 대부분 변수에 대한 구체적인 이론적 근거를 제시하지 않았고, 연구모형을 제시한 논문은 17편(29%)에 불과하였다. 또한 일반회귀모형과 달리 다층모형에서 민감한 이슈인 집단 내 최소사례 수, 결측치 처리 과정, 중심점 교정, 신뢰도 추정, 모형 적합도를 언급하지 않은 논문이 다수 있었다. 다층모형의 중요성이 점차 강조되고, 이에 부합하여 대규모 교육종단자료가 수집되고 있는 시점에서 향후 교육행정학연구에서 다층모형을 엄격하게 활용하기 위해 학회 내 지침을 마련하고 관련 교육을 강화할 필요가 있음을 제안하였다.
