이광수의 『재생』에 나타난 재생의 의미

In the 1910s and 1920s, Lee Kwang-soos literature was distinguished by the words modernity and premodernity. If modernity at this time was mainly concerned with personality or individual consciousness, premodernity was discussed in relation to community consciousness. The sense of community at this time was mainly related to Joseon(nation), 『Rebirth』 was discussed in a similar way. I wanted to understand that the sense of community displayed in the 『Rebirth』 relates to the idea of symmetry that is not returned to the nation. 『Rebirth』 shows the world deeply affected by asymmetrical thinking after the March 1 Independence Movement. The money is so powerful that it is the owner of Joseon society, and Kim Soon-young is the person who best represents it. The principle of exchange behind capital has a core power that creates an asymmetric world. The original exchange works in contrast to the gift giving and is closely related to the principle of asymmetry. The love shown in 『Rebirth』 is also based on selfish desires, which also serve as an important force in creating an asymmetric world. Bonggu is also portrayed as being in an asymmetrical state of mind, just like Soon-young, until his second prison experience. If Baek Yoon-hee tried to own Soon-young like a thing with the power of money, Shin Bong-gu tries to own Soon-young like a thing in the name of love. In 『Rebirth』, political activities such as the March 1 Independence Movement are also portrayed as based on asymmetry of personal desires or interests. When Bonggu stays in prison with a false charge, he realizes the idea of symmetry away from asymmetry. The prison at this time can be seen as a place of initiations entering a world of symmetry. The category, which applies Bonggus symmetrical thinking, extends beyond the race to the human level, and goes beyond human to the stage of universal existence. This is in line with the idea of symmetry that the existence of self is a member of society as a species and a member of nature and has meaning as a small member in the universe. Bonggu left the prison and devoted himself to the farmers in the rural practicing the symmetry he realized. If the idea of symmetry that the writer pursues is revealed through Bonggu, the writers denial of asymmetry is revealed through Sunyoung, another protagonist of 『Rebirth』. Lee Kwang-soo clearly reveals his negative sense of the asymmetrical world by giving Soon-young a miserable life and death.
