동학 편력자 권병덕의 종교 생활과 행적 : 『청암의 일생(淸菴의一生)』을 중심으로 = The Religious Life and Activities of Kwon Byeong-deok, an Experienced Eastern Learning Believer: Focusing on The Life of Cheong-am

This article aims to introduce the biographical writing of Kwon Byeong-deok (權秉悳), The Life of Cheong-am (淸菴의一生). Additionally, it organizes the content structure and characteristics of this text and describes his religious life and activities. The Life of Cheong-am is divided into three parts―Kwon Byung-deok’s family lineage, chronology, and biography. It records the daily history related to his family and livelihood, religious life, and the history of the Eastern Learning orders that he experienced. Specifically, it records his recitation of incantations, prayer training practice, and his lectures on doctrines for community members while traveling across regions as an itinerant lecturer (Sundok 巡督) in the Eastern Learning order. In his perspective, the history of the Eastern Learning orders includes the details of his service to the imprisoned Kim Yeon-guk (金演局), the process of handling the murder of believers in Haengdan-ri (杏壇里), and the process of splitting into the Jungang-sicheon-gyohoe (中央侍天敎會). In conclusion, this article draws attention not only to the fragmentary appearance of Kwon Byeong-deok, who was active as a “Cheondogyo (天道敎) believer” and an “independence activist,” but also as a “wanderer in Eastern Learning” who believed in Eastern Learning without being tied to a religious order.
