채만식의 지식인 소설에 나타난 갈등양상 연구 : 1930년대 단편소설을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

“소설은 갈등이 얽혔다가 풀어지는 과정”이라고 불릴 정도로 소설 속에서 갈등은 중요하게 다루어진다. 소설 속에 나타나는 갈등 양상은 작가의 세계관과 관련이 있으며 이를 통해 작품의 주제의식이 드러나게 된다. 채만식은 일제강점기를 살면서 민족현실에 대하여 끊임없이 고뇌했던 작가이다. 그는 혼란했던 시대를 살아가면서 작품 속에서 민족과 역사에 대한 관심을 끊임없이 표출하였다.
본 연구는 1930년대 채만식의 지식인 소설에 나타난 지식인 인물들의 갈등양상을 파악하는 것에 의의를 두었다. 작품 속 갈등구조를 통해 갈등의 의미를 파악해 보는 것은 채만식의 지식인 소설의 특성을 규정짓는 토대가 될 것이다. 본고에서는 지식인 인물이 주인공으로 등장하고 지식인의 고뇌를 다룬 채만식의 단편소설 중 대표적인 작품으로 「레디메이드 인생」, 「명일」, 「치숙」, 「소망」, 「패배자의 무덤」, 「민족의 죄인」의 여섯 작품을 선정하여 연구 대상으로 삼았다.
먼저Ⅰ장에서는 연구의 필요성과 목적을 밝히고 선행연구를 검토하였으며 연구의 대상과 방법에 대하여 논하였다. 본격적인 연구에 들어가기에 앞서 Ⅱ장에서는 1930년대 일제강점기의 시대적인 배경과 지식인 소설에 대하여 언급하였다. 이 장에서는 작품이 쓰였던 당대 시대적인 배경과 문단상황, 이러한 상황 속에서 지식인들은 어떤 모습을 가지고 있었으며 작품 속에서는 어떻게 그려지고 있는지 살펴보았다. 이후 Ⅲ장에서는 채만식의 지식인 소설에 나타난 갈등양상을 개인과 사회의 갈등, 개인과 개인의 갈등, 자아와 자아의 갈등으로 구분하여 지식인 주인공이 겪는 갈등의 상황을 자세히 살펴보고 이러한 갈등이 작품 속에서 어떻게 진행되고 있는지 살펴보았다. Ⅳ장에서는 앞서 살펴본 갈등양상들이 각각의 작품 속에서 어떻게 복합적으로 이루어지고 있는지를 갈등구조 도식화를 통하여 살펴보고 작품 속에서 갈등이 가지는 의미에 대하여 논하였다.
채만식의 지식인 소설에서는 누구보다 사회현상에 비판적인 인식을 가지고 있는 ‘지식인’인물을 주인공으로 하고 있기 때문에 개인과 사회와의 갈등이 공통적으로 발생하고 있으며, 이러한 개인과 사회와의 갈등은 개인 간의 갈등이나 주인공의 자아 간의 갈등을 유발하는 원인이 되고 있다. 작품 속에서는 여러 갈등들이 서로 얽혀서 스토리를 구성하고 있는데 갈등의 원인 또는 인물의 유형적 특성에 의하여 갈등의 지속여부가 결정된다. 채만식의 작품 속에서 나타나는 갈등들은 대부분 해소되지 않고 있다. 그리고 지식인 주인공들은 대체적으로 극단적인 선택을 보이는 경우가 많은데 작가는 이것을 통하여 시대적인 비참함을 드러내면서 당대 사회 현실을 비판하고 있다고 보아진다. 또한 그는 작품 속에서 정당한 선택을 하는 지식인 인물들을 부정적인 이미지로 묘사함으로써 자신의 친일이라는 선택이 불가피했음을 강조하고 있다.
본고에서는 지식인 소설에 나타난 갈등양상을 통하여 작품 속 갈등의 변화양상과 작가 채만식이 가졌던 현실인식에 대하여 알아보았다. 채만식의 지식인 소설은 기개(氣槪)를 가지고 사회 현실에 저항하는 인물을 그려내지 못했다는 점에서 한계가 있다. 하지만 그의 작품들은 누구보다 역사와 현실에 대하여 관심을 가지고 당대 시대상황을 생생하게 전해주고 있다는 점에서 그 문학적 가치를 간과할 수 없을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Conflict in novel is treated importantly to the point of referring novel as "a process of conflict being entangled and unraveled". The conflict aspects revealed in novel are related to the author's world view through which the thematic consciousness of the work is revealed. Chae Man-Sik is a writer who endlessly agonized over the reality of people while living in the chaotic period of Japanese occupation during which he continuously expressed his interest in his people and history in his works.
The significance of this study was placed on examining the conflict aspects of the intellectuals that were shown in the intellectual novels by Chae Man-Sik during the 1930s. Examining the meaning of conflict through the conflict structure in his works will become a foundation for defining the characteristics of Chae Man-Sik's intellectual novels. In this study, his major works among Chae Man-Sik's short novels that featured the intellectual as the main character and dealt with their agony such as 「A Ready-Made Life」, 「A Festive Day」, 「Chisook」, 「A Little Madness」, 「The Grave of the Defeated」, 「The Sinner of the People」 were chosen as the study object.
Chapter I stated the need and purpose of the study, and reviewed the preceding studies, and discussed the object and method of the study. Prior to delving into the study, Chapter II mentioned the chronological background of the Japanese occupation period in the 1930s, as well as the intellectual novel. This chapter examined the chronological background and the literary world of the time during which the writings were written, as well as how the intellectuals appeared and were portrayed in writings in the midst of such circumstance. Chapter Ⅲ examined in details the conflict situations of the intellectual main characters by dividing the aspects of conflict revealed in the intellectual novel by Chae Man-Sik into the conflict between individual and society, between individuals, and between egos, as well as how such aspect of conflict is carried out in his works. Chapter Ⅳ examined through conflict structure diagram how the aspects of conflict examined earlier are composed in combined ways in his works, as well as discussed the meaning of conflict in his works.
Since 'the intellectual' characters that have critical understanding of social phenomenon than anyone else are featured as the main characters in Chae Man-Sik's intellectual novels, conflict between individual and society is commonly occurring, and such conflict between individual and society becomes the cause of conflict between individuals or conflict between the egos of the main character. In his works, various conflicts compose the story as they are entangled with one another and the continuation of conflict is determined through the cause of conflict or the typical characteristics of character. The conflicts revealed in his works are mostly not solved. In addition, the intellectual main characters often show extreme appearances through which it seems that the author is criticizing the reality of the society at the time while revealing the pitiful state of the time. In addition, he is emphasizing that his decision to become pro-Japanese was inevitable by portraying the intellectual characters in his works that make rightful decision in a negative image.
In this study, the aspect of conflict change that was revealed in the intellectual novels, as well as the reality recognition of the writer Chae Man-Sik were examined through the aspect of conflict revealed in the intellectual novels. Chae Man-Sik's intellectual novel have a limitation in the sense that they did not portray any spirited characters that resisted against the social reality. However, the literary value of his works cannot be overlooked in the sense that they are vividly showing the chronological situation of the time upon taking more interest in history and reality than any others.
