The purpose of this study was to examine whether the major satisfaction of college students majoring in companion animals affects career preparation behavior and career preparation behavior through the medium of self-efficacy in career decision. An online questionnaire was conducted from October 1, 2023 to October 24, 2023 for 322 four-year companion animal studies students located across the country. A self-report questionnaire was conducted using the measure of major satisfaction, career decision-making self-efficacy, and career preparation behavior, and 322 copies of data were finally used for analysis. For the collected data, differences, frequencies, and percentages according to demographic characteristics were calculated using SPSS 26.0, and Sobel Test was conducted for correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediating effect verification.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, there was a significant positive (+) correlation between major satisfaction, career preparation behavior, and career decision-making self-efficacy of pet animal college students, which can increase career preparation behavior through career decision-making self-efficacy.
Second, as a result of confirming the mediating effect of career decision-making self-efficacy in the relationship between major satisfaction and career preparation behavior of college students majoring in companion animal studies, there was a partial mediating effect, and the significance of the indirect effect was statistically significant.
Third, as a result of verifying the mediating effect of the sub-variables of career decision-making self-efficacy, the significance of partial mediating roles and indirect effects was confirmed in all sub-variables such as self-evaluation, goal setting, career planning, problem solving, and work information collection. This had a positive effect on career preparation behavior by major satisfaction of college students majoring in companion animal studies.
In conclusion, these research results are various individual internal variables that affect the career preparation behavior of college students majoring in companion animal studies, and it was confirmed that there is a mediating effect of major satisfaction and career decision-making self-efficacy. This study emphasized the necessity of an educational program to improve the career preparation behavior of college students majoring in companion animal studies. In addition, for this, it is important to develop an educational program in consideration of major satisfaction and career decision-making self-efficacy. These research results are expected to provide useful information for education and career guidance in the field.
