한국어 규칙 용언과 불규칙 용언의 처리기제 = The mechanism for processing regular and irregular inflectionsof Korean verbs－A priming study－

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 한국어 규칙‧불규칙 용언이 어떤 과정을 통해 처리되는가 ― 단일기제 모형을 따르는지, 아니면 이중기제 모형을 따르는지 ― 를 고찰하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 모어 화자 90명에게 점화 지속시간이 43ms 또는 230ms인 시각적 차폐점화 어휘판단 과제와 교차양상 점화 어휘판단 과제를 실시하여 다양한 언어적 조건에서 규칙 활용형과 불규칙 활용형의 촉진적 점화효과에 어떤 차이가 나타나는지를 확인했다. 용언의 유형은 활용 시 어간/어미의 변화 양상에 따라 불변화 규칙, 발음변화 규칙, 철자변화 규칙, 어간변화 불규칙, 어미변화 불규칙 그리고 어간‧어미변화 불규칙, 총 6가지였다. 실험 결과, 점화가 230ms 동안 제시된 차폐점화 조건과 점화가 음성을 통해 제시된 교차양상 점화 조건에서는 용언의 유형에 관계없이 규칙 활용형과 불규칙 활용형 모두 후속 표적 용언의 처리를 촉진함으로써 단일기제 모형을 지지했다. 그리고 불규칙 활용형 중에서도 어간/어미의 철자적 변형이 상대적으로 적은 용언 유형이 그렇지 않은 용언 유형보다 더 강한 촉진적 점화효과를 나타냈다. 어간/어미의 철자적 변화가 큰 불규칙 활용형의 경우, 활용형 표적 어간의 빈도가 낮을수록 촉진적 점화효과가 두드러졌다. 본 연구는 다양한 심리언어학적 방법론을 사용하여 한국어 규칙‧불규칙 용언의 처리기제를 입체적으로 검증했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The present study aims at examining the way regularly and irregularly inflected forms of Korean verbs are processed: whether the mental representation of regular and irregular verb forms can be accounted for by a single representational mechanism or a dual mechanism account required. The patterns of facilitation on present tense verb targets were examined in three experiments. 90 participants who are Korean native speakers performed two lexical decision tasks with either a masked visual prime presented during 43ms (Experiment 1) or 230ms (Experiment 2) or an auditory prime (Experiment 3). Priming for six different types of verbal inflections were compared: regular verbs with no orthographical or phonological changes, regular verbs with only phonological changes to their stem, regular verbs with only orthographical changes, irregular verbs with their stem omitted or alternated, irregular verbs with changes in their endings and irregular verbs with changes in both their stem and endings. The findings revealed that when a prime was presented during 230ms visually and cross-modally before the target, it was showed that both regular and irregular inflections in Korean verbs facilitated the target latency, which posits hypotheses of the single mechanism account. In additions, orthographically more related words showed greater facilitation than orthographically less related words. The present study has implications as the first psycholiguistic attempt where various modalities of a prime were employed in primed lexical decision tasks and their results were compared in depth.
