라깡의 정신분석 이론과 여성성 재현: 레비나스의 여성성 재현과의 비교를 중심으로 = Lacan`s Psychoanalytic Theory and Its Representation of a Woman: In Comparison with Levinas`s Represention of a Woman

This paper is to compare Lacan`s representation of a woman with that of Levinas. Lacan and Levinas share a common ground in terms of their concepts of a woman as being open and something of the other in its oppositional relation to a system of closure and maleness. In the case of Lacan, his concept of a woman as ``feminine jouissance`` which defies any effort to represent it and as oppositional to ``masculine jouissance`` reveals the traditional concepts of sexual difference to be merely social constructs resulting from effrots to cover up the lack in the Other of language in its confrontation with the real. Levinas`s view of a woman relies in the concept of a woman as the other who cannot be included in the sameness of the male subject and thus helping the male subject to overcome its fixation with its own sameness. In Levinas`s scheme, a woman takes the exemplary role of alterity in that a woman through her maternity and her role of comprising the other within her shows how a woman is regarded as a figure of ethics for her caring for the other and taking responsibility for the other. Levinasian woman is also associated with the other by providing dwelling for the subject where the subject let his pursuit of the self and his effort to delimit himself from "there is" stop for a while, thus being ready to be responsive to the other or the other`s face. Despite these positive attitudes toward a woman, Lacan and Levinas are frequently attacked by feminists for their views of a woman as being traditional and sexist, assigning a woman only to the other, not the postion of the self. This paper will reveal these misrepresentations of the two theorists` views of a woman as resulting from the discrepancies between the said and the saying, the phenomena caused by the aporia of language which proves to be in default in its confrontation with the real which goes beyond the reach of the symbolic language. In conclusion, the paper will focus the aspect of the excluded middle, that is, the real that cannot be wholly represented by the language in the case of Lacan or by the closed system of traditional metaphysics of ontology in the case of Levinas. In the two thorists` discourses, the real is designated respectively as ``objet a`` or the face of the other. These objects of indeterminacy reveal the open and ever elusive aspects of the real or the face of the other which inspire the reader to be alert to the real that is located beyond the finite and logical discourses of closure and patriarchy.
