The purpose of this study was to examine in detail attitude of teachers toward leisure education and current status of leisure education in Seoul middle and high schools. The conclusions of the study are as follows : 1) The teachers showed keen interest in leisure education and felt that such education was needed. Also, even though the teachers believed that there was a need for dedicated recreation leaders, almost no such leaders existed in Seoul secondary schools. 2) The average duration for extra curricular activities was one hours; however, there was not enough time allotted for leisure education and almost no special leisure program was available for the students. So in reality, there were no systematic programs for the students. 3) Schools lacked adequate facilities and materials for leisure education. Most schools also lacked specific instructions or policies regarding leisure education. Most teachers did not possess special knowledge and skills necessary for such education. 4) The main problems of leisure education, in the order of importance, during extra curricular or after-school activities were a) lack of plans for leisure activities ; b) inadequate facilities and materials ; c) improper execution of leisure programs by dedicated resources ; and d) lack of awareness on teachers part. 5) In the order of importance, challenges facing middle and high schools regarding leisure education were a) improvement of facility and expansion of materials for leisure activities ; b) increase in amount of extra curricular activities during which leisure education is provided free of charge ; c) provision of training and education for leisure and recreational activities for teachers; d) proper encouragement of leisure activities to students ; and e) making full use of available recreation leaders.
