여성의 음부(Yoni)와 죽음의 연관성에 관한 단편적 성찰 - 달의 경로(月經)와 여성성, 그리고 죽음과 재생 = A Fragmentary Reflection upon Yoni and Death: Menstruation, Femininity, Death and Regeneration

There has been a negative attitude towards women's sex and menstruation in the western world. Women's sex has been given various names such as pudendum, wicked womb, or even vagina dentata, to name a few. Even though women's sexual organs are those of life from which life flows, one has been tempted to see them as death dealing ones when thinking that out of life comes death. Hence the unfair incrimination for the woman's death-inducing procreativity, the typically cunning strategy of men to ascribe the mutual responsibility of both sexes to only one weaker party -- the feminine. The negation of women's sexual organs have been further reinforced by the idea of the bleeding vagina. A double standard is working here, however, because women's menstrual as well as parturient blood have been regarded as dirty whereas men's blood for violence and war, uplifting and sacred.
The negative representation of female sex reached its climax in the fin-de-siècle France, where Charles Baudelaire and Emile Zola were notorious for their harsh attitudes and naturalistically graphic details of women's sex. The recuperative process, however, in which women are regaining their life force has been made by different artists such as Judy Christ and Christina Camphausen, and it is time to recover the dual meaning of death which promises for another life and regeneration. The insight that womb has been the organ of life and death should be recycled in the age in which violence and death prevail. We are returning to the original site from which we are born -- the tomb which is cosmic womb.
