The lipophilic gel has been studied for absorbent for various organic solvents. In this study, we present an engineered lipophilic sponge gel consisting of silicon back bone cross-linked with poly(succinimide) grafted methacrylates for absorbing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The absorption behavior of the lipophilic gel was examined by varying of degree of substitution of acrylates in the cross-linker. The swelling behavior of the lipophilic gel in VOCs solution such as toluene could be controlled with expansion ratio (S) and elastic modulus (E) of the gel. In addition, VOCs vapor absorbency of lipophilic sponge gel was analyzed using residual VOCs vapor by GC. Overall, this new strategy to prepare the super lipophilic gel using the graft cross-linking polymer would be directly used for designing effective VOCs absorbing material.
