urial practices in the late Gaya period provide key archaeological evidence for understanding the power structure of regional polities and their interregional interactions. The Banseongcheon basin in Jinju occupied a strategic position linking the inland transportation routes of the middle Nam River basin with the maritime networks of the southern coast, and thus formed a zone in which the influences of So-Gaya, Ara-Gaya, and Dae-Gaya intersected. The Wondang Tumuli, located in this basin, constitute an important burial complex that reflects changes in mortuary practices and the reorganization of regional political order from the fourth to the sixth century.
This study examines Tombs No. 1 and 2 of the Wondang Tumuli, with particular focus on the recently investigated large horizontal stone chamber tomb of No. 2, in order to clarify their structural characteristics, construction techniques, and mortuary significance. The results show that Tomb No. 2 was constructed on a slope by first creating an earthen foundation and then building a large stone chamber above it. In particular, the lower part of the mound was reinforced through the deliberate embankment of a large earthen support, while additional stabilization techniques were employed to control the inward thrust generated by the upper inward-leaning stone walls. These features indicate that the tomb was not a simple burial facility, but a monument constructed on the basis of advanced structural planning and engineering.
The rectangular plan with a central corridor, the narrow entrance, and the nearly hexagonal cross-section of the burial chamber suggest a close genealogical affinity with the horizontal stone chamber tombs of the So-Gaya tradition, particularly those known from the Yeondang-ri and Naesan-ri areas of Goseong. At the same time, the methods used for mound preparation, earthen embankment, and wall construction also reveal technical similarities to tomb-building practices in the Ara-Gaya sphere. The Wondang Tumuli therefore cannot be explained within a single lineage of mortuary tradition; rather, they reflect a composite character shaped by multiple regional influences.
Furthermore, the associated pottery and Nuam-ri-type belt ornament suggest that the use of Tomb No. 2 may have continued into the period immediately following Silla’s incorporation of the Gaya polities. In this respect, the Wondang Tumuli represent significant archaeological evidence for the layered intersection of So-Gaya tradition, Ara-Gaya construction technology, and the reorganization of political order under Silla in the Jinju region during the late Gaya period.
