1951년 유엔묘지 전몰장병 헌정식 - 1950~1951년 임시 유엔묘지의 통합에서 헌정식에 이르는 과정 고찰 - = Dedication Ceremony of the UN Cemetery During the Korean War, 1951 - A Study on the Integration Process from Temporary UN Cemeteries 1950~1951 to the Dedication -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

2020년 한국전쟁 70주년과 더불어 2021년은 한국전쟁에서 희생된 유엔군 전사자들의 공식 묘지인 재한 유엔기념공원이 조성된 지 70주년을 맞이하는 해이다. 이러한 기념비적 사건이 교차하는 시점에서 유엔기념공원의 위상을 고찰하는 작업은 이 장소의 역사적 함의를 시의 적절하게 되짚어 보는 데 그 의의가 있다.
본고에서는 한국전쟁기인 1950년 7월 이후 한반도에 산재하던 임시 유엔묘지의 조성과 통합을 거쳐 현재 유엔기념공원의 전신인 유엔묘지가 1951년 4월에 준공되는 역사적 과정을 살펴보았다. 특히 그간 학계에서 제대로 규명되지 않았던 1951년 4월 6일 유엔묘지 헌정식의 양상을 최초로 자세히 짚어보았다. 임시 유엔묘지의 조성 과정과 본 헌정식에 관해서는 선행연구에서도 다루어진 바 있으나, 이 논문에서는 다각도의 멀티 아카이브(multi-archival) 조사를 통해 발굴한 헌정식 관련 문서와 영상사료를 처음으로 교차 분석함으로써 차별화를 두고자 하였다.
무엇보다 유엔기념공원은 2030년대 유네스코 세계유산 등재를 앞두고 부산광역시가 추진하고 있는 ‘피란수도 부산유산’의 주요 구성자산 중 하나인 점을 감안할 때 논문에서 제시하는 1951년 헌정식 사료는 향후 세계유산 등재에 필요한 자료로 유용하게 활용될 수 있을 것으로 전망한다. 이로써 본 연구는 1950년대 유엔묘지 연구의 공백을 보완하고 학술 담론의 외연을 넓히고자 한다. 그리하여 본고가 유엔묘지 건립 70주년을 맞이하는 2021년, 한국전쟁이라는 국제 규모의 군사(軍史)와 대한민국 현대사, 그리고 부산 역사가 중첩되는 교차로를 재점검하고 향후 한반도와 참전국 간의 미래지향적 관계를 탐색하는 밑거름이 되기를 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

2021 marks the 70th anniversary of establishing the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK), the official cemetery of UN soldiers who participated in the Korean War. As these monumental events intersect, it would be timely to re-examine the status of the UNMCK and reflect on the historical implications of the place.
This research explores the integration progress of temporary UN graveyards scattered on the Korean Peninsula from July 1950 to the completion of the Tanggok UN Cemetery in April 1951. I attempted to examine the aspect of the dedication ceremony of the UN Cemetery held on April 6, 1951, which has not been thoroughly investigated in the existing literature. Notably, this study looks into unreleased historical documents and video materials conducted through multi-archival surveys.
The study thus seeks to fill the research gap of the UN graveyards in the 1950s and expand the scope of academic discourse. Considering that the UN Memorial Cemetery is one of the major components of the “War-time Capital Busan Heritage” in Busan in preparation for the UNESCO’s World Heritage listing in the 2030s, this study is expected to be vital for World Heritage listing. This research will also play a consolidating role for the future-oriented relationship between Korea and the UN allied nations in 2021, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the construction of the UN Cemetery.
