The purpose of this study is to illuminate the limits and possibilities of the ideal of an educated person in the national school curriculum, which should meet the need called for under the rapidly changing conditions in the so-called knowledge-based society or information society. First, we review the nature of the ideals of an educated person presented implicitly or explicitly in the national school curriculums in Korea, which have been going through periodic reformation since 1945. Secondly, we analyze in depth the meaning and function of the ideal of an educated person focused on the current school curriculum, and thereby disclosing its problems as an educational goal. The functional problem is about the issue that the ideal of an educated person fails to function in the practices of educative process by being separated as an end-in-itself independently of the complexity in actuality. The signification problem refers to the issue that the meaning of the ideal of an educated person is not clearly defined yet based on a consistent philosophic ground reflecting the postmodern view of the world and human nature. Finally, we illuminate the possibility of establishing a philosophically-grounded ideal of an educated person, which relates organically to the practices of education, with reference to the changing perspective in the current curriculum field.
