식물의 성장이미지를 표현한 장신구 연구 : 섬유소재의 활용을 중심으로 = A Study on the Jewelry Expressing the Growing-image of Plants : Focusing on the Application of the Fabric Material

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날 공예는 재료나 기법에 따라 공예분야를 구분하던 전통적 방식을 넘어 기법과 재료의 새로운 결합으로 표현되는 상상력과 창의력에 주목하는 경향이 있다. 이러한 경향은 단지 공예계 내부의 경계를 허무는 것에 머무르지 않고, 인간의 관심과 사고의 대상이 될 수 있는 모든 분야를 공예의 주제로 삼고자 하는 경향으로 나아가고 있다.
현대장신구의 두드러진 특징 역시 재료와 기법의 다양성이라는 점을 들 수 있는데, 확대된 다양한 재료 속에서 나의 관심을 끈 것은 의복이나 실내장식, 침구류와 같이 일상생활에서 나와 밀착되어 있는 재료인 섬유이다.
이 연구는 섬유소재를 장신구에 응용하여 섬유가 가진 재료적 가능성을 금속공예와 결합하고자 하는 의도에서 시작되었으며, 식물의 운동과 성장에서 나타나는 이미지를 표현하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다.
이 연구에서 주제로 삼고 있는 ‘식물의 성장이미지’란 식물의 운동과 성장에서 느껴지는 감상과 느낌을 이미지화 하는 것으로 두 가지 의미로 해석할 수 있다.
첫 번째로는 식물의 생명력과 성장에서 느껴지는 생명에 대한 외경 혹은 생태적 의미에서 떠올리게 되는 인상印象이다. 두 번째로는 연속적 운동과 흐름으로 나타나는 식물 성장의 한 순간을 포착하여 이미지로 표현한 형상形象을 말한다.
식물의 운동은 동물의 운동에 비해 상당히 느리고 정적이다. 싹이 움트고 꽃이 피어나는 미세한 움직임은 우리의 눈으로는 느껴지지 않을 만큼 천천히 일어난다.
나는 이러한 식물의 성장에서 느껴지는 시간의 흐름이나 과정의 어느 한 부분을 포착하여 작업으로 표현하고자 하였다. 연속적인 운동과정의 한 순간을 포착하는 것은 감상자로 하여금 그 운동의 방향성을 예측하게 하여 현재 속의 미래를 느끼게 하는 것에 그 의미가 있다.
내 작업은 금속이라는 비옥한 토지에 실과 천을 가지고 식물의 성장을 그려나간다고 비유할 수 있다. 전체적인 틀로서 금속은 식물이 잘 자랄 수 있는 조건을 갖춘 토양처럼 실을 고정하고 섬유를 지탱해 줄 구조와 조건을 가지고 있어야 한다. 그 위에 실과 천은 팽창과 확산, 긴장과 율동과 같은 식물의 성장에서 나타나는 요소를 표현하고 있는데, 그 방식으로 섬유 열고정가공Heat Set 기법과 실을 이용한 나선의 반복 효과를 사용하고 있다. 섬유의 열고정가공으로 만들어진 단위형태들은 군집된 형태를 만들기에 적합하다. 단위형태의 반복과 중첩은 섬유를 더욱 풍성하게 하여 확산과 팽창을 나타내는 데 유리하다. 중복되고 밀집되어 표현되는 나선의 반복적 패턴은 식물의 미세한 움직임을 율동으로 그려내고 끊임없는 성장을 예고한다.
금속과 섬유의 결합은 금속이 가진 밀도감과 견고함, 섬유가 가진 유연성과 풍부한 질감을 조화시키는 것이기도 하다. 금속은 고정된 유기적 형태를 만들어 주고 장신구의 기본 조건을 충실히 수행하고 있으며, 섬유는 금속의 틀에 부드러운 곡선과 풍부한 질감, 색감을 부여하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

These days, the modern crafts tend to focus on such factors as imagination and creativity which are expressed for the new combination of techniques and materials by overcoming the traditional method which used to classify the field of crafts according to materials or techniques. Such a trend does not just break down the border in the field of crafts, but also tends to focus on the topic related to every field of crafts which can be the subject of human interest and thoughts.
It can be said that the notable feature of the contemporary jewelry can be regarded as the feature of variety based on materials and techniques. Among the expanded range of various materials, the fabrics have attracted my attention, since they are close to me in my daily life through such items as clothes, interior ornaments and bedding items.
This study has been started with the intention of combining the material possibility of the fabrics with the metalwork by applying the fabrics to jewelry. It focuses on the expression of images which are shown in the movements and growth of plants.
The 'Growing-image of plants' which are regarded as a topic of this study are based on the impressions and feelings provided by the movements and growth of plants. They can be interpreted in two ways.
The first image is the imprint which is reflected by the awe or the ecological meaning about lives, which can be felt from the vitality and growth of plants.
The second image is the figure which captures a moment of life for the growth of plants which is shown through the consecutive movements and flows.
The activities of plants are much slower and more static than those of animals. The detailed movements of the sprouting or blooming plants occur slowly enough to prevent us from seeing the movements with our own eyes. I have tried to capture a part of the time flow or process which could be felt through the growth of plants for my work. I have not tried to show a static movement by capturing a moment of the kinetic process. The reason for capturing a part of the consecutive process is to make the spectator predict the direction of the movement in order to feel the future in the present.
My work can be described as the description of growing plants on the metals by using threads and fibers on the fertile soil. As an overall frame, the metals must be equipped with the structures and conditions that can fix the threads and support the fibers clothes like the fertile soil that has the conditions for the growth of plants. On the soil, the threads and fibers express such features as expansion and spread as well as tension and rhythm, which are seen on the growth of plants. Such methods as the heat-set technique for fibers and the repeated effect of the spiral which uses the threads are used.
The unit patterns made with the heat-set technique for fibers are appropriate for the establishment of grouped patterns. The repetition and duplication of the unit patterns make the fibers become much richer, making the expansion and spread become more advantageous. The repeated patterns of the spiral which are duplicated and concentrated express the detailed activities of plants by using rhythms and predict the continuous growth.
The combination between metals and fibers can be regarded as the harmonization between such features as density and strength of metals and such features as flexibility and rich texture of fibers. While metals establish fixed organic patterns and execute the basic functions of jewelry, fibers establish soft curves, rich texture and colors on the frames of the metals.
