Community revitalization and community spirit rising are being highlighted even in urban life throughout our society. The social trend that puts emphasis on efficiency and productivity due to urbanizaton and industrialization is deepening individualism and leading to destruction of human relationships and accelerated family disorganization. In order to reflect on these negative phenomena, there is an increasing need for a cooperative human relationship with a sense of community.
Since local governments launched the community building and community revitalization projects, these projects have been applied to apartment housing which occupies over 50% of all the Korean housing forms, as well as single-detached housing. For this reason, it is not too much to say that the need for community is growing by gradation.
Like Korea, Japan has been implementing a community revitalization project to revitalize exchanges of residents in individual regions or apartment housing complexes. Rather than being limited to apartment complexes, this project is applied to the construction of urban small towns too, along with complex development of local single-detached houses, apartment complexes and commercial facilities.
This study, therefore, aims to suggest a community support direction that is appropriate for Korean circumstances by investigating and analyzing the community development process and community activities of a housing complex in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, as one of relevant cases.
