심미의식과 도덕적 지향의 통합 = Integration of Aesthetic Consciousness and Moral Spirit: In Case of T’oegye

국문 초록 (Abstract)

유가사상에서 시를 창작하는 작업은 경전의 독서 및 마음공부와 긴밀히 연계되어 있다. 이 같은 예술적 활동과 즐김은 사람의 성정性情, 특히 감성적 영역을 다스리는 데 중점을 둠으로써 이성적 영역의 활동을 보전하고 충만하게 하려는 목적의식을 지니고 있다.
퇴계는 시작詩作을 통해 산수자연山水自然의 아름다움만을 형상화하는 탐미주의자가 아니다. 그는 문이재도文以載道론자로서 시를 통해 성정性情의 도를 밝히고 내면의 도덕의식을 함양하고자 한다. 시의 본질은 성정의 바름을 나타내는 것이고, 시의 효능은 심성의 도야라고 인식했기 때문이다.
그렇다고 해서 퇴계의 시 세계를 편협하게 도덕적 관점으로만 이해하려 해서는 곤란하다. 그가 시문에 담고자했던 ‘도道’는 도덕성정만을 뜻하였던 것은 아니다. 문이재도에서 ‘도’를 삼강오륜이나 인의예지신仁義禮智信의 단순한 수신 덕목으로 한정하는 것은 협량한 재단이다. ‘심기가 화평하고 뜻이 천박하지 않으며, 온화하고 조용한 사려 속에 기가 솟구치고 정신이 발랄해져서 정서가 무르녹고 의기가 빼어나는’ 온유돈후溫柔敦厚의 시적 효능이 도덕적 덕목의 구현으로만 한정될 수 없는 것이다.
퇴계는 자연 물상의 이미지에서 유비적類比的 사고를 통해 윤리정감을 이끌어내고, 그것을 심미의식 속에 통합시켜 함양한다. 그의 시 세계는 무욕의 정신으로 가득차 있다. 그의 심미의식은 물아일체 또는 천인합일의 이념과 불가분의 관계를 이루고 있다. 그래서 퇴계의 시 세계는 심미의식과 도덕적 지향 사이에 조화로운 통합을 추구하고 있는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

T’oegye Lee Hwang was a great philosopher and poet. He was a typical moralist, but on the other hand, he admitted the independent significance of the literature. The fact that he wrote more than two thousand poems bears this out. Therefore, we have to comprehend not only his philosophic rationality but also his artistic sensibility to understand his thoughts.
The Tao that T’oegye tried to clarify through poems includes not only truth and moral value, but also aesthetic value. He tried to illuminate the principle of life and objects, promote the moral consciousness, and he actively pursued the aesthetic through the poems. This will show us a different world-view and life-spirit that we could not see in his philosophy.
T’oegye attached great importance to the spirit of artistic play in study. Play is an act that makes people contemplate objests without regards to their conventional uses, letting them get out of every restriction and enjoy liberty in the imaginative world. There is a full of pleasant sensation issuing from this sort of artistic play in T’oegye’s aesthetic consciousness. And thereby he got relaxed from mental stress and restriction that moral reason gives. It does not mean that his aesthetics weakened the moral consciousness. Conversely, the former made the latter stronger.
