Methods to prevent environmental pollution are researched and progressed, and various institutional methods are presented even in art education as importance of environmental education are emerged.
This study presents environment-friendly crafts design education methods that holistic education theory is applied for middle school students.
Middle school students subject to education are laid in a very confusing time when negative critical consciousness and experience a rapid change in terms of physical body, cognition and emotion, and social development for them to form with others is very important in this time. Thus, holistic education theory to think highly of 'relationship' and 'generality' can help to form and establish ideal self-image in an adolescent period, and understand relationship with nature and boost environmental consciousness.
Holistic education theory emphasizes 'relationship' such as relationship between human beings and relationship between human being and nature. It pursues whole-person education which is a perfect development of human being and is the objective of art education as well as pursues natural-friendly education to learn from 'generality' of life and a natural growth look with key words of balance, integration and relationship. Education course also emphasizes 'generality' and spiritual aspects as well as intellectual aspects and social, ethnical, esthetical and creative aspects. Thus, holistic education theory can be referred to as very effective education theory in environment-friendly education, and can make environmental education on various methods in link with education theory for crafts design.
This study developed program to be utilized in a middle school on the holistic education theory and method and suggested a learning guide draft. The learning guide draft was performed according to the 4th stage with 3 themes 'Making of eco-bag', 'Making of Reuse Notebook' and 'Making of Environmental Newspaper' on the 'Movement for Conserving Polar Bear'.
Firstly, 'Making of eco-bag' lesson is performed by participating in 'Movement for Conserving Polar Bear' and expressing emotion in mind through image activity with characters and figure mark design by visualizing it. This lesson is helpful to recognize 'relationship' that human being and earth, and human being and nature is a body, and to boost mind to protect and keep nature knowing that damage due to global warming may have effect on human being shortly as well as polar bear.
Secondly, 'Making of Reuse Notebook' lesson is to make a notebook by using waste articles and wools easily obtainable in a daily life. This lesson is performed to cultivate mind to save and spare resources by attempting to make a reuse notebook, and understand basic principle of composition and express heart formed through sensitive experience characteristically by using wools.
Thirdly, 'Making of Environmental Newspaper' lesson is a method to solve problems in the lesson course through interaction by a cooperative learning. It is also possible to feel severity of environmental problems and seek solutions by directly planing, designing and making an environmental newspaper, and to recognize 'relationality' and 'generality' between human being and nature.
It is thought that students can discover a functional pattern in a daily life. develop formative capacity composing it through diverse and widespread lesson activity as above and cultivate creativity, scientific property and social nature. In addition, students can realize severity of environmental pollution and nature destruction through a course of connecting nature and our whole life and recognize relationship that human being and earth, human being and nature are connected as a whole. By such efforts, it is thought that we can try to think and carry out possible methods for nature and serve to restore relationship between human being and nature.
