This study is to examine existing theories about the integrated grammar education and to analyze a grammar unit of the 2010 revised textbook. And the purpose of this study is to suggest the practical learning activities for the integrated grammar education and to supplement this education. I've focused on suggesting and improving specific ways to teach the integrated grammar education.
The integrated grammar education is the way to teach language skills , such as speaking, listening, reading, writing and literature all together to enhance the applicability of grammar in the practical use of language. Teachers have taught the existing grammar education independently, so students have avoided learning grammar and have regarded grammar as just something needed for a lesson or a test. Consequently, this study emphasizes that grammar is very important for fluency and accuracy in the practical use of language. Grammar education should be applied to the practical use of language closely. The 2007 revised National Korean curriculum said that it is necessary to teach grammar and other parts together.
As a result, the 2010 revised text book was released, and 7th grade students are only studying with this book. Therefore, I have analyzed the structure and grammar units of 23kinds of 'Korean' and 'Practical Korean' text books, and I have tried to find the specific way to teach the integrated grammar education that is regarded as just an alternative of teaching grammar. The learning activities evaluated the levels and degrees of integration as good, average, or bad based on the standard table. And I've classified the learning activities into ‘mutual equal type’, ‘complementary type’, ‘mutual independent type’, ‘inherent grammar type’ and ‘auxiliary grammar type’ and looked into each specific feature. Most text books follow the 2007 revised National Korean curriculum well, so the separation between 'Korean' and 'Practical Korean' has been reduced and the units in each text book have become the same. 'Korean' focuses on the understanding of Korean language whereas 'Practical Korean' focuses on the application and use. And the text books are developed to encourage learners have interest in Korean by using various and specific language materials.
But the way to teach the integrated grammar education still isn't good, so I have tried to find a better way by classifying expression (speaking, wring), comprehension (listening, reading), and literature in order to show the possibility of integration with other parts. As a result, I've found that above all, the teacher's ability is important to teach the integrated grammar education. And as we can use language by understanding grammar, I've found a possible way to effectively teach.
This study has some limitations. The better way the researcher suggested hasn't been applied in the practical teaching and the integration of parts is a little bit unnatural because this study is limited to the 7th grade students level. The existing studies have just suggested the model of the integrated grammar education, but this study suggests a specific way to make integrated grammar education better by analyzing the text book according to the curriculum.
Education has changed, and next year, the new text book that applies the 2009 revised National education curriculum will be released. I expect this study will improve the existing Korean education system and will be used as a guide to make a good text book to help language learners study easily.
