This article focuses on the 120-page illustrations of the Yuan Wuai version[袁無涯本] of Water Margin published in the late Ming Dynasty. We consider how painters visually embody the time element in their illustrations. In particular, Yiji Dongdo[異地同圖] and Yisi Dongdo[異時同圖] revealed the fact that painters use various methods to make time heavy or flow backwards in their illustrations. There are five types of time narration: basic time narration, general time narration, reversible time narration, cyclic time narration, and simultaneous narration. We can also see the fact that painters can express their own interpretations through this kind of space-time operation. Furthermore, the mutual connection between Yiji Dongdo and Yisi Dongdo was also clarified by the fact that the time element is immediately combined with the spatial element.
