≪Shirenyuxie≫ is a collection of talks on poetry by Wei-QingZhi in the Southern Song Dynasty. ≪Shirenyuxie≫ is composed of poem theories and creative methodologies in the first half and critical essays of the writers and his work in the second half. This manuscript is the translation and annotation of <Duanlin> included in Volume 8. This chapter are the core theme in the creative methodologies in the first half. In <Duanlin>, the key point of writing poems depends on studying phrasing and it is most subject to awareness of following prosody in strict fairness like dealing with laws. The writers in the Song Dynasty thought to be able to raise the level of writing poems through studies on their frames and rules. The argument that faulty letters are removed and perfect ones should be found shows the diehard belief in prosody. The importance of studying phrasing continues to be emphasized like “Poems must be corrected” and “Excellent phrases must require excellent letters.” And many examples of correcting phrases successfully are quoted. Especially, the point that the concept of poetic eye (詩眼) and the successful cases was discussed and the rule to make the position of poetic eye the third letter in verses with five words to each line and the fifth letter in ones with seven words to each one was presented has found to be awareness of the writers in the Song Dynasty who tried to approach writing poems through analyses and standardization.
