The faculty of Arts and Science requires students to organize their studies within the format of "specialist" or "major" programmes, which vary according to the number of courses involved.
The nine specialist programmes sponsored or co-sponsored by the Department of Geography are intended for those students who wish to make geography the focus of their four-year undergraduate education. Each of these carries the student from the introduction to a particular field of study, through courses on analytical techniques, to upper-year seminars which deal with the latest thinking and research in the field. Students who do well access to planning schools, graduate schools and professional careers.
The seven major programmes arrange courses in a similar way. However, they do not require as many research related courses as do the specialist programmes. The major programmes are designed for students who are looking for some depth of education in geography including some familarity with the patterns of thought in the discipline, but who are pursuing equally important work in other disciplines. Major in geography obtain ready access to professional school and graduate programmes related to their discipline.
It is possible to transfer from a specialist programme to a major and vice-versa. Furthermore, students enrolled in two major programmes of a major and a specialist programme-sponsored by the Department of Geography-will be able to use up to one credit for both programmes. Thus, someone pursuing two major programmes in this Department will need at least eleven geography course credits.
